a conviction that a want exists, which it is hoped they will help to supply. There are many, in all sections of the Church, who regard the use of a Liturgical Service, in which the congregation take an audible part, as conducive to the solemnity and interest of the worship; and who admire the beauty and appropriateness of parts of the Liturgy of the Church of England. It is for such worshippers that this compilation is specially intended.

It will be seen at once that these Services are not meant to supersede free prayer in public worship, but to supplement and assist it. Common acknowledgments and common wants may suitably find expression in a Liturgy; while the endless diversities of religious expe

rience, and the varied duties and trials of personal and social life, seem to require freedom of utterance unrestricted by form. The worship that combines both will, in many cases, be the most comprehensive and edifying.

Besides the free prayer for which provision is made in the course of each service, the Introductory Chant may, where it is desired, be preceded by a short extempore prayer, according to the present custom in many Congregations.

As the chief object of a Liturgical form is to enable all to join intelligently and feelingly in the common prayer or thanksgiving, it is evident that its end will not be gained unless the worshippers join with heart and voice in the service; with utterance at once audible and devout, distinct and reverent. In this way will each one best secure the advantages of united worship, both for himself and others.
