laid him." And when she had thus said, she turned back, and saw Jesus standing, but knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, "Woman, why weepest thou? Whom seekest thou?" She, supposing him to be the gardener, answered, "Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away." Jesus saith unto her,

Mary!" She turneth herself, and saith unto him, "Raboni," which is to say, "My Master." Jesus saith unto her, "Touch me not,* for I am not yet about to ascend to my Father; but go to my brethren, and say to them, I shall ascend to my Father and to your Father, to my God and to your God.""

Mary Magdalene went and told the disciples, that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things to her.

* Our Lord means to say, Stop not to shew thy friendship and affection to me now; for I shall not leave you yet.

ANOTHER ACCOUNT OF THE RESURRECTION BY MATTHEW.

(Ch. xxviii. 1-15.)

WHEN the sabbath was past, and the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, came to see the sepulchre. (Now there had been a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord had descended from heaven, and had come and rolled back the stone from the entrance of the sepulchre, and was sitting upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. And for fear of him, the guards did shake, and became as dead men.) And the angel answered, and said to the women, "Fear not; for I know that ye seek Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples, He is risen from the dead; and behold he goeth before you into

Galilee; there ye shall see him.' Lo, I have told you."

Then they departed quickly from the sepulchre, with fear and great joy, and ran to bring his disciples word. And as they were going to tell his disciples, behold Jesus met them, saying, "All hail!" And they came and held him by the feet, and did him obeisance.

Then said Jesus unto them, "Be not afraid; go tell my brethren, that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me."

And as they were going, behold some of the guard went into the city, and shewed to the chief priests all that had happened. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, saying, "Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away, while we slept.' And if this come to the governor's ears, we will appease him, and free you from all fear of pun

ishment." So they took the money, and did as they were taught. And this story is commonly reported among the Jews to this day.

JESUS APPEARS TO THE APOSTLES. (Luke xxiv. 13-49; John xx. 24-29; Matt. xxviii. 16-20.)

THE same day two of the disciples went to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem threescore furlongs. And as they talked together of all those things which had happened, Jesus himself drew near, and walked with them. At first their eyes were holden, so that they did not know him; but afterwards, when he was sitting at meat with them, he took bread and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave to them; and then their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

* That is, about seven miles and a half.

And they arose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven assembled together, and them that were with them, who said, "The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon." Then the two disciples told what had happened on the road, and how Jesus was made known to them by his breaking of bread.

As they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said unto them, "Peace be unto you." But they were terrified and affrighted, and thought it was a spirit which they saw. And he said, "Why are ye troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; handle me and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. And when they yet believed not for joy and amazement, he said unto them, "Have ye here any thing to eat?" Then they gave him
