5 “ This tried almighty hand • Is rais'd for their defence; “ Where is the power shall reach them there? " Or what shall force them thence?” 6 Enough, my gracious Lord, Let faith triumphant cry; 465. C.M.-Christ's Sheep guarded by Omnipotence. John x. 29, 30. 1 IN one harmonious cheerful song, Ye happy saints combine; The Saviour is divine. To him the Father gave; And strong his arm to save. And Christ and he are one; Attacks the eternal throne. 4 That hand which heaven and earth sustains, And bars the gates of hell, Shall guard his chosen well. 5 Now let the infernal lion roar, How vain his threats appear! 466. Rise from the vanities of time, P 2 Born by a new celestial birth, Why should we grovel here on earth? So near to heaven's eternal joys? When we are walking back to God? And dying is but going home. That sets our longing souls at large; And gives us with our God to dwell. 5 To dwell with God, to feel his love, Is the full heaven enjoy'd above; 467. P.M.-“ For what is your life? it is even a vapour." James iv. 14. 1 WHAT is life? 'tis but a vapour, Soon it vanishes away; Life is like a dying taper; O, my soul! why wish to stay? Why not spread thy wings and fly, Straight to yonder world of joy? 2 See that glory, how resplendent! Brighter far than fancy paints; There, in majesty transcendent, Jesus reigns, the King of saints. Spread thy wings, my soul, and fly Straight to yonder world of joy. 3 Joyful crowds his throne surrounding, Sing with rapture of his love; Through the heavens its praises sounding, Filling all the courts above: Spread thy wings, my soul, and fly Straight to yonder world of joy. 4 Go, and share his people’s glory, 'Midst the ransom'd crowd appear; Thine a joyful, wondrous story, One that angels love to hear: Spread thy wings, my soul, and fly Straight to yonder world of joy. 468. C.M.-God the everlasting Light of the Saints above. Isa. lx. 20. 1 YE golden lamps of heaven, farewell, With all your feeble light: Pale empress of the night. In brighter flames arrayed, No more demands thine aid. Of my divine abode, Where I shall reign with God. 4 The Father of eternal light Shall there his beams display; With that unvaried day. Shall swell into my eyes; Amidst those brighter skies. Shall in one song unite, With infinite delight. 469. C.M.- Our Desire and Groaning before God. Ps. xxxviii. 9, 10. 1 MY soul, the awful hour will come, Apace it passeth on, And thee to scenes unknown. Shall pant and sink away; On the last glimmering ray. A cordial for my pain, When, if earth's monarchs were my friends, Those friends would weep in vain? 4 Great King of nature and of grace, To thee my spirit flies, And opens all its deep distress And every secret fear, Well notic'd by thine ear. Which to such love belongs, And groans are chang‘d to songs. 470. L.M.- The Happiness of departing and being with Christ. Phill. i. 23. 1 WHILE on the verge of life I stand, And view the scene on either hand, And longs to wing its flight away. It faints my much-lov'd Lord to see; 3 Come, ye angelic envoys come, And lead the willing pilgrim home: Source of my joys, and of your own. 4 That blessed interview, how sweet! To fall transported at his feet! Through the full beamings of his grace. 5 As with a seraph's voice to sing ! To fly as on a cherub's wing? A present Saviour's high commands. 6 Yet with these prospects full in sight, I'll wait thy signal for ignal for my flight! ! my heaven begun below. 471. L.M.-The dying Saint. Upward he lifts his longing eyes; Triumphs in pain, and sings in death. 2 Oh, who can tell what secret power Supports him in the gloomy hour; Or whence proceeds that cheerful air? 3 A smile upon his lips appears, His face a heavenly aspect wears; Each grief remov’d, each sin forgiven, On earth he feels the dawn of heaven. 4 Sinners behold, and wondering cry, Thus, like the righteous, let me die! |
