Mr. CowPER's Hymns, without any other alteration whatever than the occasional omission of a whole verse. The present enlarged Edition of the Appendix is enriched by many of the beautiful compositions of Mr. KELLY and Mr. MONTGOMERY, to whom, and to my other esteemed friends who have favored me with original pieces, I take this opportunity of returning my sincere thanks. The general arrangement of the work, it is hoped, will be found simple, comprehensive, and useful. Under that part which relates to the Christian life, I have united an alphabetical with a natural order of subjects, which may facilitate the selection of Hymns on particular topics. Attention, also, has been paid to the introduction of a moderate variety of those metres in which Dr. WATTS'S Psalms and Hymns are generally considered deficient. And may the promised Era soon arrive, when the whole Earth shall become the Temple of Jehovah, in which all nations shall unite in the Songs of Zion, and every heart, in sweetest harmony, ascribe "Blessing and honor, and glory, and power, unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb, for ever and ever." Amen. those who may peruse them merely for the sake of the poetry: yet I think many of them will stand the test of a critical examination, and appear at least equal to other compositions of the like kind: and I am persuaded they will all be delightful and beneficial to those who desire to have their devotions enlivened, their souls filled with divine love, and who are ambitious to live up to the rules of the gospel; and that they will, through the influences of the Holy Ghost, spread a spirit of fervent piety in such congregations where they may be introduced."
