PREFATORY REMARKS.

THE increasing interest in Congregational Singing is creating a demand for a book adapted for use in small Christian assemblies, at a reduced price! In view of this fact, the Publishers here present the first part of the "Songs of the Church," embracing a sufficient number of Hymns and Tunes, for all practical purposes in the Chapel, Lecture-Room, PrayerMeeting, or Social Circle. The character of this selection is attested by the very extensive introduction of the "Songs of the Sanctuary" (from which book most of these pieces are taken) into numerous Presbyterian and Congregational Churches throughout the country.

2 No more fatigue, no more distress, Nor sin, nor death, shall reach the place; No shall mingle with the songs groans That warble from immortal tongues.

3 No rude alarms of raging foes;

No cares to break the long repose;
No midnight shade; no clouded sun;
But sacred, high, eternal noon.

4 Soon shall that glorious day begin,
Beyond this world of death and sin;-
Soon shall our voices join the song
Of the triumphant, holy throng.

3.

1 ANOTHER day has passed along,
And we are nearer to the tomb,
Nearer to join the heavenly song,
Or hear the last eternal doom.

2 Sweet is the light of Sabbath eve,
And soft the sunbeams lingering there;
For these blest hours, the world I leave,
Wafted on wings of faith and prayer.
3 The time how lovely and how still;

Peace shines and smiles on all belowThe plain, the stream, the wood, the hillAll fair with evening's setting glow.

4 Season of rest! the tranquil soul

Feels the sweet calm, and melts to loveAnd while these sacred moments roll, Faith sees the smiling heaven above.

5 Nor will our days of toil be long,
Our pilgrimage will soon be trod;
And we shall join the ceaseless song-
The endless Sabbath of our God.

4.

1 My opening eyes with rapture see
The dawn of thy returning day;
My thoughts, O God, ascend to thee,
While thus my early vows I pay.

2 Oh, bid this trifling world retire,
And drive each carnal thought away;
Nor let me feel one vain desire-
One sinful thought through all the day.
3 Then, to thy courts when I repair,
My soul shall rise on joyful wing,
The wonders of thy love declare,
And join the strains which angels sing.
5.

I COME, gracious Lord, descend and dwell,
By faith and love, in every breast;
Then shall we know, and taste, and feel
The joys that cannot be expressed.

2 Come, fill our hearts with inward strength, Make our enlarged souls possess,

And learn the height, and breadth, and length

Of thine eternal love and grace. 3 Now to the God whose power can do More than our thoughts and wishes know, Be everlasting honors done,

By all the church, through Christ, his Son.
