May we be, therefore, pure in heart, shunning even the appearance of evil, and growing this day and every day in the divine life, according to the perfect pattern of our blessed Saviour.

We pray, heavenly Father, that thou wouldst send down thy best and choicest blessings upon our kindred and friends; and that our friends may be the friends of our God, and true disciples of thy Son. Bless thy church universal. Pity the poor and the afflicted. Heal the sick. Strengthen the weak and the tempted. Deliver the oppressed. Reclaim the sinner. Hasten the time when all men shall know thee the one living and true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.

All which we ask through him who hath taught us in praying unto thee to say,

"Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen."

XL.

Triumph of the Gospel.

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

Teaching us, that denying ungodliness, and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and piously, in this present world;

Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God, and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify to himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

O THOU who alone hearest prayer, and unto whom all flesh should come, in the name and as the disciples of Jesus Christ, whom thou hearest alway, and with whom thou art ever well pleased, we would present ourselves before thee this morning, and in the spirit and with the confidence of children would offer thee our humble sacrifice of prayer and praise.

We thank thee, O thou preserver of men, for thy kind and paternal care of us during the silent and defenceless hours of the last night. We would rejoice in the pleasant light of another morning. We thank thee for the providence that preserves our lives, for the food that nourishes our bodies, for the relationships that cheer and gladden our hearts, and, above all, for the religion that animates and confirms our hopes. Continue these blessings to us, give us grace to improve them aright, and make us worthy of enjoying them.

Help us to realize our dependence upon thee for all the privileges, blessings and comforts, of this life, and

for all the hopes and prospects of a better. May we improve the blessings of a common providence, as the gifts of a munificent Benefactor; and our Christian privileges, as the exceeding riches of thy grace in thy kindness towards us, through Jesus Christ. To this end may we receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save our souls. Help us to open our minds and hearts to the light and influence of the truth as it is in Jesus, thanking thee that thy grace, which bringeth salvation, hath appeared to us in him.

We supplicate thy presence, protection and blessing, during the day on which we have entered. Spread over us the wing of an ever guardian providence, and shield us from every danger and from every casualty. Prosper us in every lawful undertaking, and bring us to the close of the day still surrounded with thy mercies, and still among the living to praise thee.

We look to thee for a blessing upon the inhabitants of this town, and all our towns. We pray for those who are languishing on beds of sickness, and have wearisome days and nights assigned them. Comfort all who mourn with the consolations of the Gospel, which hath abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light. Show thyself to be a Father of all the fatherless, the Judge and husband of the widow, the rod and staff of the aged, who tremble on the edge of the grave. Give repentance unto sinners; give comfort, confidence and hope, to the penitent; and

bring all to the knowledge and obedience of the truth, that they may be saved. Denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, may they live soberly, righteously and piously, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, the glorious appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ.

And wilt thou hasten the time when the mild and pacific principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ shall take possession of all hearts, and unite the whole family of mankind in one great brotherhood, where there shall be no contest but for a crown of glory; no strife but to excel in deeds of benevolence, philanthropy and charity; no triumph but the triumph of truth; when the last universal empire shall be the empire of the Prince of peace, of the increase of whose government, and the duration of whose reign, there shall be no end. Thus throughout the world may he redeem from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. And unto thee, the ever-living and only true God, through Jesus Christ would we ascribe everlasting praise. Amen.

Daily Virtues.

Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which, is

evil; cleave to that which is good.

Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another;

Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing earnest in prayer;

Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Bless them who persecute you; bless, and curse not.

Rejoice with them that rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

If it is possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place to wrath for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

Therefore if thy enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

Be not overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

MOST High and Mighty Lord, our God, to thee we owe again the pleasant light of the sun, the renewed strength of the morning, and the hopes of day. How benevolent is thy providence, and how rich is thy grace! In thy light may we see light, and walk as children of the day, and shun all the works of darkness. Let it please thee to take us, and all things belonging to us, this day under thy fatherly
