manner all thy benefits. Let me be grateful that thou didst hallow one day of seven, in memory of the great work of creation; and that now, each Christian Lord's day, while it celebrates this first of miracles, commemorates that other expression of thy love, the resurrection of the Saviour of the world. Thanks be to thee that on this Lord's day we, and multitudes of those who name his name and trust in his salvation, may keep the feast which shows forth the Lord's death until he come.

Let me adore thee, O my God, for that sacred and mysterious offering which procures our pardon; for the solemn burial, which, with all its attendant circumstances, proved the reality of the Lord's death; and for that glorious resurrection and ascension which sealed the acceptance and efficacy of the one great sacrifice. Incline and quicken and strengthen me this day to remember and review these great events believingly, devoutly, and joyfully. O let the sorrows of life around me, and the sure prospect of infirmity and dissolution before me, and the deep sense of manifold sin within me, endear exceedingly and above all price the assurances of a Saviour's love, and work,

and purpose. 0 grant to me, and those who shall

commune with me, and all throughout the world who shall engage in this sacred ordinance, rightly to discern the Lord's body; his sufferings, his grace, his life-giving power. By a living and effectual faith may we become one body in him; with him to die to

sin, and with him to rise into joint and endless blessedness.

Lord, grant us those desires, resolves and hopes, those aspirations and heavenly aids, during and after this ordinance, which will make it truly an inestimable privilege, truly a means of eternal blessings through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.

Prayer to be used by a Sunday-School Teacher before engaging in Keligions Instruction.

O THOU who seest my whole heart, and knowest all my unfaithfulness, how can I hope, except by thy special blessing and surpassing mercy, to be an instrument of spiritual good, while I am myself so low in spiritual attainments, so worldly, so indifferent, so weak in faith, and so unworthy in thy sight. Yet, O my God, thou canst cause the earthen vessel, the broken vessel, the too often dishonored vessel, to receive and convey the balm and medicine of thy heavenly truth, to the praise and glory of thy own name. O deign to bless my feeble endeavors and ministrations this day. Let the prayers which shall be poured out be uttered in a believing, contrite, grateful, earnest spirit. Let the words of comment and enforcement which may be offered be words of

truth and soberness, conducing to the edification of Christians, and the conviction and renovation of those who as yet believe not.

O Thou that hast all hearts in thy almighty hand, be pleased so to move and guide my failing mind and heart, and those of others, that we may derive from these means of grace wisdom, and strength, and new devotedness. Fix in my soul, and in every soul present, more forcibly than ever, the practical and prevailing persuasion, that to depend on thy help is indispensable; that to be spiritually-minded is life and peace; that to serve thee in simplicity and godly sincerity, through Jesus Christ, is the way of true freedom and exaltation, of true content and joy; that nothing in the tents or palaces of wickedness or earthly pleasure can compare with the happiness of walking in the light, as thou art in the light. O let the blood of Christ purify us from all iniquity; and do thou take away every evil thought and imagination of the heart, confirming each right and self-denying aim and resolve within us, that we may live and die unto the Lord, and be meet for his undefiled home and rest.

Heavenly Father, make all the services of the day, and of the remaining Lord's days which thou mayest grant us upon earth, effectual for these great ends to us and ours, and to all in every place whom we love or ought to love; and bring us all together in the one temple of thy eternal grace and glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

COLLECTS.

I.

Our Leader and Defender.

ASSIST us mercifully, O Lord, in these our supplications and prayers, and dispose the way of thy servants toward the attainment of everlasting salvation; that among all the changes and chances of this mortal life, they may ever be defended by thy most gracious and ready help, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

II.

Guidance from God.

O GOD, the protector of all who trust in thee, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy, increase and multiply upon us thy mercy, that, thou being our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal that we finally lose not, the things eternal. Grant this, O heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

III.

The Divine Keeping.

ALMIGHTY GOD, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves, keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

IV.

Continual Help.

ASSIST us, O Lord, in all our doings, with thy most gracious favor, and further us with thy continual help; that in all our works begun, continued and ended in thee, we may glorify thy holy name, and finally by thy mercy obtain everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

V.

For Direction and Preservation.

O ALMIGHTY LORD and everlasting God, vouchsafe, we beseech thee, to direct, sanctify and govern both our hearts and bodies, in the ways of thy laws,
