Whoso walketh uprightly shall be saved: but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once. Mal, iii, 17, 18. THE LOT IN ANCIENT TIMES AN APPEAL TO PROVIDENCE. Num. xxvi, 55, 56. Notwithstanding the land shall be divided by lot: according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands. And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken. When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found. 1 Sam. xiv, 39-42. For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him. Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee. Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken; but the people escaped. And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken. 1 Chron. xxiv, 5, 31. Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governor of the house of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, aud of the sons of Itha mar. These likewise cast lots over against their brethren the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, and Zadok, and Ahimelech, and the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites even the principal fathers over against their younger brethren. 1 Chron. xxv, 8. And they cast lots, ward against ward, as well the small as the great, the teacher as the scholar. 1 Chron. xxvi, 13. And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to the house of their fathers, for every gate. Esth. iii, 7. In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, betore Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar. Jong And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. Prov. xvi, 33. The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD. Prov. xviii, 18. The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty. Dan. xii, 13. But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days. Micah il, 5. Therefore thou shalt have none that shall cast a cord by lot in the congregation of the LORD. (AFFLICTIVE PROVIDENCES, See under Disease and Death.) 6th. ASPECTS OF PROVIDENCE TOWARDS THE RIGHTEOUS. IN TEMPORAL BLESSINGS. Deut. xxvili, 11, 13. And the LORD shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers to give thee. And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them. Deut. xxx. 9, 10. And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the LORD will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers; If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy and his statutes, which are writGod, to keep his commandments, ten in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul. 2 Sam. v, 10. IN SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS. 1 Sam. xii, 14, 15. If ye will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye, and also the king that reigneth over you, continue following the LORD your God: But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers. 2 Chron. xv, 7. Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak; for your work shall be rewarded. Job xxii, 21. Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. Ps. v, 12. For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield. Ps. xviii, 24. Therefore hath the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight. Ps. xxiv, 5, 6. He shall receive Ps. xxv, 10. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. Ps. Ixv, 4. Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple. Ps. lxxxiv, 11. For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. Ps. xcvii, 11. Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart. Ps. cvi, 3. Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times. Prov. xxi, 21. He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour, Jer. xxxli, 6. Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth. Zech iii, 6, 7. How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood? Job xxxi, 2. 3. For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
