WAR A FREQUENT OCCURENCE AND THE RESULT OF SINFUL PASSION.

Ps. ix, 6. O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: and thou hast destroyed cities; their memorial is perished with them.

WAR

RIOTS.

Exod. xxxii, 17, 18. And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp. And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome; but the noise of them that sing do I hear.

Isa. xxii, 2. Thou that art full of stirs, a tumultuous city, a joyous city: thy slain men are not slain with the sword, nor dead in battle.

Acts xxi, 30, 31. And all the city was moved, and the people ran together; and they took Paul, and drew him out of the temple: and forthwith the doors were shut.

CIVIL WARS AND PANICS.

Judges vii, 22. And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the LORD set every man's sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-shittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.

Judges xil, 4. Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites.

1 Sam. xiv, 16, 20. And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one an other. And Saul and all the

people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.

2 Chron. xx, 23. ...... And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.

WAR A SCOURGE OF DIVINE
PROVIDENCE.

Jud. iii, 10. And the Spirit of

the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.

Jud. xi, 29. Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah,and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

1 Chr. v, 22. For there fell down many slain, because the war was of God. And they dwelt in their steads until the captivity.

Isa. ix, 11,12. Therefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his enemies together. The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. . . . .

Isa. xiii, 3-5. I have commanded my sanctified ones, I have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even them that rejoice in my highness. The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle. They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the LORD. and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land.

1sa. xxvi, 21. For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

Isa. xxxiv, 2, 3. For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter. Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their carcases, and the mountains shall be

melted with their blood.

Jer. xlvii, 5-7. Baldness is come upon Gaza; Ashkelon is cut off with the remnant of their valley: O thou sword of the LORD, how how long wilt thou cut thyself? long will it be ere thou be quiet? Put up thyself into thy scabbard, rest, and be still. How can it be quiet, seeing the LORD hath given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea-shore? there hath he appointed it.

Jer. xlviii, 10. Cursed be he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from

blood.

Ezek. xxxv, 5, 6. Because thou hast had a perpetual hatred, and hast shed the blood of the children of Israel by the force of the sword in the time of their calamity, in the time that their iniquity had an end. Therefore, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will prepare thee unto blood, and blood shall pursue thee: sith thou hast not hated blood, even blood shall pursue thee.

Joel ii, 20. But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hiuder part toward the utmost sea; and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.

Nahum iii, 1, 2. Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departeth not; The noise of a whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the prancing horses, and of the jumping chariots.

Isa. xlv, 5--7. The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers. He who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hindereth. The whole earth is at rest, and is Hab. il, 10. Thou hast consulted quiet: they break forth into sing-shame to thy house by cutting off ing. many people, and hast sinned against thy soul.

Isa. xvii, 14. And behold at evening-tide trouble; and before the morning he is not. This is the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us.

And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword: But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thon shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee. Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.

Josh. vi, 10. And Joshua bad commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.
