3 Sleep, sleep for ever, guilty thoughts !
Let fires of vengeance die;
A Ĝod of purity !
1 Before Jehovah's awful throne,
Ye nations, bow with sacred joy ;
He can create, and He destroy.
Made us of clay, and formed us men;
He brought us to His fold again. 3 We are His people, we His care,
Our souls and all our mortal frame;
Almighty Maker, to Thy name? 4 We'll crowd Thy gates with thankful songs;
High as the heavens our voices raise;
Shall fill Thy courts with sounding praise. 5 Wide as the world is Thy command;
Vast as eternity Thy love;
Be Thy glorious named adored;
Hail, celestial goodness, hail!
Yet our hallelujahs hear;
When around Thy throne we sing. 3 While on earth ordained to stay,
Guide our footsteps in Thy way;
Songs of everlasting praise.
Hail, celestial goodness, hail !
1 Eternal Source of light and thought !
Be all beneath Thyself forgot,
In prostrate homage round Thy throne. 2 Whilst in themselves our souls survey
Of Thee some faint reflected ray,
3 O may we live before Thy face,
The willing subjects of Thy grace ;
1 Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;
To pay thy morning sacrifice.
Let thine own light to others shine;
In ardent love and cheerful praise. 3 Lord, I my vows to Thee renew,
Disperse my sins as morning dew,
And with Thyself my spirit fill.
All I design to do or say;
In Thy sole glory may unite.
And hast refreshed me while I slept:
of endless life partake!
As ye journey, sweetly sing;
Glorious in His works and ways ! 2 We are travelling home to God,
In the way the fathers trod :
Soon their happiness shall see.
On the borders of our land :
Bids you undismayed go on. 4 Lord ! obediently we 'll go,
Gladly leaving all below:
Supremely good and wise !
To Thee we lift our eyes. 2 Our dark and erring minds illume,
With Truth's celestial rays; Inspire our hearts with sacred love,
And tune our lips to praise.
3 Conduct us safely by Thy grace,
Through life's perplexing road; And place us, when that journey 's o'er,
In Heaven, Thy blest abode.
1 Glory be to God on high,
God, whose glory fills the sky;
Man, the well-beloved of heaven!
Endless thanks to God belong :
Join the hymns your voices raise! 3 Call the tribes of beings round,
From creation's utmost bound;
There be solemn praise addressed. 4 Mark the wonders of His hand !
Power, no empire can withstand ;
Goodness, one eternal stream.
Send Thy promised blessings down: Let Thy light, Thy truth, Thy peace, Bid our raging passions cease!
