3 But ah! how wide my spirit flies, And wanders from her God!
My soul forgets the heavenly prize, And treads the downward road.
4 Great God! create my soul anew, Conform my heart to Thine; Melt down my will, and let it flow, And take the mould divine.
5 Then shall my feet no more depart, Nor wandering senses rove; Devotion shall be all my heart, And all my passions love.
1 Jehovah! 't is a glorious name, Still pregnant with delight; It scatters round a cheerful beam, To gild the darkest night.
2 What though our mortal comforts fade, And drop like withering flowers? Nor time nor death can break that band Which makes Jehovah ours.
2 My cares! I give you to the wind, And shake you off like dust; Well may I trust my all with Him, With whom my soul I trust.
1 Gracious Spirit, dwell with me,- I myself would gracious be; And with words that help and heal Would Thy life in mine reveal; And with actions bold and meek Would for Christ my Saviour speak.
2 Truthful Spirit, dwell with me,— I myself would truthful be; And with wisdom kind and clear Let Thy life in mine appear; And with actions brotherly Speak my Lord's sincerity.
3 Tender Spirit, dwell with me,- I myself would tender be;
up like a flower At temptation's darksome hour; Open it when shines the sun, And his love by fragrance own.
4 Silent Spirit, dwell with me,— I myself would quiet be;
Quiet as the growing blade
Which through earth its way has made;
Silently, like morning light,
Putting mists and chills to flight.
5 Mighty Spirit, dwell with me,- I myself would mighty be; Mighty, so as to prevail
When unaided man must fail; Ever by a mighty hope Pressing on and bearing up.
6 Holy Spirit, dwell with me,- I myself would holy be; Separate from sin, I would
Choose and cherish all things good; And whatever I can be
Give to Him who gave me Thee.
1 A present God is all our strength, And all our joy and hope,
When He withdraws, our comforts die, And every grace must droop.
2 But flattering trifles charm our hearts To court their false embrace; Till, justly this neglected Friend Averts from us His face.
3 He leaves us, and we miss Him not, But go presumptuous on!
Till, baffled, wounded, and enslaved, We learn that God is gone.
4 And what, O God! can then remain One ray of light to give?
Severed from Thee, their better life, How can Thy children live?
1 Nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee!
E'en though it be a cross That raiseth me:
Still all my song would be,- Nearer, my God, to Thee,- Nearer to Thee!
2 Though, like the wanderer, The sun gone down, Darkness be over me, My rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I'd be Nearer, my God, to Thee,- Nearer to Thee!
3 There let the way appear, Steps unto heaven; All that Thou sendest me, In mercy given;
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to Thee,- Nearer to Thee!
4 Then with my waking thoughts Bright with Thy praise, Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise :
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God, to Thee, - Nearer to Thee!
5 Or if on joyful wing Cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, Upward I fly:
Still all my song shall be, Nearer, my God, to Thee,- Nearer to Thee!
encamp around
The dwellings of the just: Deliverance He affords to all
Who on His succour trust.
2 O make but trial of His love; Experience will decide
How blest are they, and only they, Who in His truth confide.
3 Fear Him, ye mortals; you will then Have nothing else to fear;
Make you His service your delight,- He'll make your wants His care.
