SECT. XVI.

LET us then endeavour to put ourselves in the place of early Christians, and see how writings, circumstanced as these Catholic Epistles were, might be authentic, and yet not at once universally received.

1. First, take a geographical view of the countries, in which Christianity was professed in the fourth Century: examine the extent of the Eastern and Western Church, and you will readily admit, that a writing

• In Bingham's Antiquities, Bool. ix. we have ecclesiastical maps; particularly of the three Patriarchates, of Antioch, Alexandria, and Jerusalem; nor can it be difficult, in any book of Geography, to trace out the extent of the See of Rome, by the directions of ecclesiastical history, at any period: or that of any of the European Churches. Indeed Bingham might suffice for the present purpose.
