295 1 Luke xviii. 1. 7s & 6 s.t COME, ye followers of the Lord, In Jesu's service join, Jesus gives the sacred word, The ordinance divine; And ask and have whate'er we want; 2 Place no longer let us give To the old Tempter's will; Never more our duty leave, While Satan cries, "Be still;" Stand we in the ancient way, And here with God ourselves acquaint; Pray we, every moment pray, And never, never faint. 3 Be it weariness and pain To slothful flesh and blood, Yet we will the cross sustain, And bless the welcome load; All our griefs to God display, And humbly pour out our complaint; Pray we, every moment pray, And never, never faint. 4 Let us patiently endure, Pray we, every moment pray, 5 Pray we on when all renewed, All his heavenly charms survey, 296 In a hurry of business. S. M. HELP, Lord! the busy foe Is as a flood come in! My soul away from thee. 2 The praying Spirit breathe, 3 Swift to my rescue come, 1 SHEPHERD Divine, our wants relieve In this our evil day, To all thy tempted followers give 2 Long as our fiery trials last, Long as the cross we bear, 3 The Spirit of interceding grace 4 Till thou thy perfect love impart, 5 "I will not let thee go, unless Thou tell thy name to me, 6 "Then let me on the mountain-top Where faith in sight is swallowed up, 2 "Let me alone, that all my wrath May rise the wicked to consume! While justice hears thy praying faith, It cannot seal the sinner's doom; My Son is in my servant's prayer, And Jesus forces me to spare.' 3 O blessed word of gospel grace! Which now we for our Israel plead, A faithless and backsliding race, Whom thou hast out of Egypt freed; O do not then in wrath chastise, Nor let thy whole displeasure rise! 4 Father, we ask in Jesu's name, In Jesu's power and spirit pray; Divert thy vengeful thunder's aim, O turn thy threatening wrath away! Our guilt and punishment remove, And magnify thy pardoning love. 5 Father, regard thy pleading Son { Accept his all-availing prayer, And send a peaceful answer down, In honour of our Spokesman there; Whose blood proclaims our sins for given, (5) And speaks thy rebels up to heaven, 1 7s & 6 s.t Luke xviii. 1-8. 299 thou hast bid us pray, JESUS, Pray always, and not faint; With the word a power convey To utter our complaint; And bruise the Serpent's head! And grasp the sinner's friend; And bruise the Serpent's head? 129 3 I want a godly fear, A quick-discerning eye, That looks to thee when sin is near, And sees the Tempter fly; A spirit still prepared, And watching unto prayer. 4 I want a heart to pray, To pray and never cease, Never to murmur at thy stay, Or wish my sufferings less. This blessing, above all, Always to pray, I want, Out of the deep on thee to call, And never, never faint. 5 I want a true regard, A single, steady aim, (Unmoved by threatening or reward) To thee and thy great name; A jealous, just concern For thine immortal praise; A pure desire that all may learn, And glorify thy grace. 6 I rest upon thy word; The promise is for me; 4 Then infuse the teaching grace, Spirit of truth and righteousness; 1 AH, when shall I awake The slumber from my spirit shake, Awake, no more to sleep, But stand with constant care, Looking for God my soul to keep, And watching unto prayer! 2 O could I always pray, And never, never faint, I know that thou wouldst give 3 I feel thee willing, Lord, But at the throne of sovereign grace 4 Here will I ever lie, And tell thee all my care, And fill with peace and joy. 5 Messiah, Prince of peace, 4 Mercy who show shall mercy find; Thy pitiful and tender mind Be, Lord, on me bestowed; So shall I still the blessing gain, And to eternal life retain The mercy of my God. 5 Jesus, the crowning grace impart; That, now beholding thee, 6 Not for my fault or folly's sake, Let me be wronged, reviled, abhorred; In life and death confess. 7 Called to sustain the hallowed cross, SECTION IV. FOR BELIEVERS WATCHING. 305 1 S. M. GRACIOUS Redeemer, shake This slumber from my soul ! Say to me now, "Awake, awake! And Christ shall make thee whole." Lay to thy mighty hand! Alarm me in this hour, And make me fully understand The thunder of thy power. 2 Give me on thee to call, Always to watch and pray, And cast my shield away; |
