SECTION I.-NAME OF THE BOOK.
1. The first book in the Bible is called in Hebrew, Bereshith, that being the word with which the book begins. The Hebrews were accustomed to name the books of the Bible in this way. The name "Genesis" is Greek, and has the meaning of generation or origin, and is given to the book on account of the subject of which it first treats.
