bring all things unto your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Now is the Son of man glorified; and God is glorified in him. If God be glorified in him, God shall glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him :" shewing, my love, the Father and Son were one.

It is the duty of every one who bears the name of Christian to open his doors, and his heart, and his treasury, to the utmost of his power, to the missionary, and even the mite of a poor man should be given: for God will bless the land and the individual who does these things.

Are there other ministers, Mamma, to preach the word of God?

We are blessed, my loye, with the best national church in the world: where is no idolatry, but the doctrine of which is Jesus Christ crucified; over which are bishops, meaning elders, deacons, and priests. Large sums of money are contributed by the country to support this church; and enormous sums of two and three thousand a year given to some bishops.

For what, Mamma?

To give to the poor, my love, to go about from house to house, and town to town, encouraging pastors, and giving alms to the needy and helpless, by which they strengthen the belief of their hearers in the knowledge of Jesus.

O, Mamma, how I should like to be a bishop?
Nay, my child, do not say so.

Yes, Mamma, I should so like to have plenty of money, to give to the poor, and to go about speaking of Jesus, and encouraging others to do the same. Then indeed, my love, would your mother join in your wish.

But that money given in charge, as the steward of God, to you as the almoner of the poor, may become a temptation to you; and instead of its being laid out as I have mentioned, it may be lavished in the gratification of the vanity, lust, and pride of your heart, my love; and O, how awful would be your punishment in the next world!

Nay, Mamma, I would give all that I had, and then become a missionary, and travel all around the world, depending upon God to feed me, as he does the lily and the grass of the field: and when I had taught long enough in one town, and obtained many believers, then I would appoint one to fill my place, and then would I go to another town, and do the same; and so would I travel the world, my dear Mamma and then would I write to all the towns where I had taught the gospel of Christ, and those whom I had taught should write to me: and then, when I died, Mamma, O then would I give all these letters in heaven to my Jesus, my dearest Mamma.

My beloved, my heavenly child, O may your heart thus be filled with the Holy Spirit of God, to do according to thy word! For many, my love, have turned from righteousness through this temp tation of high salaries, and many have become professing ministers for pecuniary advantages, instead of being called as righteous ministers to serve God, and be content with the loss of all things for the gain of Christ. This has made many holy, just men dissent from the Church, and form themselves into different sects.

And will God allow different sects and parties, Mamma?

It does appear to me a wise purpose of God, my love, to bring about a reformation in the church; as God said he would provoke the Jews to jealousy by a people who knew him not, alluding to the Gentiles; that he would teach them his knowledge and his righteousness, and pour his Spirit upon them, by whose works and faith the Jews would be ashamed: for God said, that although they have stumbled, they should not fall, but rather through their fall salvation should come unto the Gentiles: so that I have no doubt this fall of the church will become conspicuous; that they will be provoked to emulation, and salvation will come to millions yet unborn. And I trust the day is not far distant,

when the stumbling-blocks of the church will be re moved, and all Christians unite in one church and one bond, with Jesus at its head, being of the same mind one toward another.

Is it better then, Mamma, to belong to a sect, by which we may excite to emulation?

Every one must be fully persuaded in his own mind by prayer, my love, before he quits his esta blished church, when its tenets are pure gospel ; while any one persuaded in his own mind to quit on account of its abuses, doubtless God has so ordered it in him. On the contrary, if we feel not this persuasion, it is our duty to remain, and is not sin in us to do so. If all the holy men quit the church, how will it ever be reformed? Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus remained, my love, in the wickedest state of the Jewish church, and they were holy men, and accepted of God: so likewise, in the established, are there burning and shining lights, my love.

Then, Mamma, with God's assistance, I hope to be in that situation to which he appoints me, which I shall know by this persuasion exerting itself in my own mind.

By God's power, my love, not his assistance. God is not an assistant, but a Principal. Assistance signifies an auxiliary, and an inferior. The relation of an assistant signifies to serve, a term which would make

God subservient to your commandments, instead of your being in that relation to him. If I want to lift this trunk, I am unable to do it by myself, and therefore I call for assistance. I am the principal, therefore, while you are merely a co-operator: while the contrary is the case. God is the Principal, in whom we breathe, move, and have our being; and our relation to him is as instruments subservient to his will. Many pious people have thoughtlessly thus expressed themselves, and even it has been erroneously written in some of our Church collects. It is wickedness, my love, to apply any term, when speaking of God, which admits of a definition detracting from his supreme, infinite, and almighty power. But in reply to your question, my sweet child, I am unquestionably of opinion, that it is better to keep to the Church, since there is the largest congregations, and consequently the greater sphere of usefulness, and a holy man will be able to sow the seed in large uncultivated wastes, instead of confining himself to spots which are already fruitful, and need not his labour. Our Lord was in Nazareth and Galilee, my love, amidst sinners; he went not among the Israel of Judea.

Have not all persons, Mamma, the same wish, who have heard so much of God, as I have, to serve him in the way I desire?
