Ps. 4: 8.

179
EDMESTON. 181
SAVIOUR, breathe an evening blessing,
Ere repose our spirits seal;
Sin and want we come confessing;
Thou canst save, and thou canst heal.

2 Though destruction walk around us,
Though the arrow near us fly,
Angel guards from thee surround us;
We are safe if thou art nigh.

3 Though the night be dark and dreary,
Darkness cannot hide from thee;
Thou art he who, never weary,

Watcheth where thy people be.

4 Should swift death this night o'ertake us,
And our couch become our tomb,
May the morn in heaven awake us,
Clad in light and deathless bloom.

HEAVENLY Shepherd, guide us, feed us,
Through our pilgrimage below,
And beside the waters lead us,
Where thy flock rejoicing go.

2 Lord, thy guardian presence ever,
Meekly bending, we implore;
We have found thee, and would never,
Never wander from thee more.

MAY the grace of Christ our Saviour,
And the Father's boundless love,

With the Holy Spirit's favor,

Rest upon us from above!

2 Thus may we abide in union
With each other and the Lord;
And possess, in sweet communion,
Joys which earth cannot afford.

Gather fast the shades of night;
May the Sun which ever shineth
Fill our souls with heavenly light!

2 While, thine ear of love addressing,
Thus our parting hymn we sing,
Father, grant thine evening blessing,
Fold us safe beneath thy wing!

ALMIGHTY God, thy word is cast
Like seed into the ground;
Now let the dew of heaven descend,
And righteous fruits abound.

2 Let not the foe of Christ or man
This holy seed remove,
But give it root in every heart

To bring forth fruits of love.

3 Let not the world's deceitful cares
The rising plant destroy,
But let it yield, a hundred-fold,
The fruits of peace and joy.

4 Nor let thy word, so kindly sent
To raise us to thy throne,
Return to thee, and sadly tell
That we reject thy Son.

5 Oft as thy precious seed is sown,
Thy quickening grace bestow,

That all whose souls the truth receive,
Its saving power may know.

O GOD, the Light of all that live,

ANON.

[blocks in formation]

WHILE We lowly bow before thee,
Wilt thou, gracious Saviour, hear!
We are poor and needy sinners,
Full of doubt and full of fear;
Gracious Saviour,

Make us humble and sincere.

2 Fill us with thy Holy Spirit;
Sanctify us by thy grace;
Oh, incline us more to love thee,
And in dust our souls abase.
Hear us, Saviour,

And unvail thy glorious face.

3 None in vain did ever ask thee
For the Spirit of thy love;
Hear us, then, dear Saviour, hear us;
Grant an answer from above;

Blessed Saviour,

Hear and answer from above.

HEBER.

190 C. M.

O GOD! by whom the seed is given,
By whom the harvest blessed,

Whose word, like manna showered from
heaven,

Is planted in our breast,—

2 Preserve it from the passing feet,
And plunderers of the air,
The sultry sun's intenser heat,
And thorns of worldly care.

3 Though buried deep, or thinly strown,
Do thou thy grace supply;
That truth, in earthly furrows sown,
May ripen in the sky.

BLEST are the souls that hear and know
The gospel's joyful sound;
Peace shall attend the path they go,

And light their steps surround.

2 Their joy shall bear their spirits up
Through their Redeemer's name;
His righteousness exalts their hope,
Nor Satan dares condemn.

3 The Lord, our glory and defence,
Strength and salvation gives;
Israel, thy King forever reigns,
Thy God forever lives.

I LOVE the volume of thy word; What light and joy those leaves afford To souls benighted and distressed! Thy precepts guide my doubtful way, Thy fear forbids my feet to stray, Thy promise leads my heart to rest. 2 From the discoveries of thy law, The perfect rules of life I draw:

These are my study and delight; Not honey so invites the taste, Nor gold, that has the furnace passed, Appears so pleasing to the sight.

3 Who knows the errors of his thoughts? My God! forgive my secret faults,

And from presumptuous sins restrain; Accept my poor attempts of praise, That I have read thy book of grace, And book of nature not in vain.

HOLY Bible! book divine!
Precious treasure! thou art mine!
Mine to tell me whence I came;
Mine to tell me what I am;—

2 Mine to chide me when I rove;
Mine to show a Saviour's love;
Mine thou art to guide and guard
Mine to punish or reward;-

3 Mine to comfort in distress,
If the Holy Spirit bless;
Mine to show, by living faith,
Man can triumph over death;-
4 Mine to tell of joys to come,
And the rebel sinner's doom;
Oh, thou holy book divine!
Precious treasure thou art mine!
