Of the Means of Grace.

I will direct their work in truth.

Isa. Ixi. 8.

He led him about, He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of His eye. As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings; so the Lord alone did lead him. Deut. xxxii. 10-12.

Thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying: This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand and when ye turn to the left. Isa. xxx. 21. Ability for Good Discourse.-The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom. The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable. Prov. x. 31, 32.

The heart of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly. Isa. xxxii. 4. The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue is from the Lord. Prov. xvi. I.

To one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom, to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit. I Cor. xii. 8. I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay or resist. Luke xxi. 15.

X. Of the Means of Grace.

And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction; yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers. Isa. xxx. 20. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places. They shall not hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heat nor sun smite them. Isa. xlix. 9, 10.

leadeth me beside the still waters.

Psa. xxiii. 2.

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace, that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation, that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth ! Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice, with the voice together shall they sing. For they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion.

Isa. lii. 7, 8.

Even them will I bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer, their burntofferings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon Mine altar; for Mine house shall be called a house of prayer for all people. Isa. lvi. 7.

I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace, day nor night. Isa. lxii. 6.

I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. Isa. xli. 18.

I will give you pastors according to Mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding. Jer. iii. 15.

Their soul shall be as a watered garden. And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, saith the Lord. Jer. xxxi. 12, 14.

He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ; till we all come in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. Eph. iv. 11-13.

A Blessing upon the Ordinances.

I will feed My flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord. Ezek. xxxiv. 15.

A Blessing upon the Ordinances.-They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of Thy house, and Thou shalt make them drink of the river of Thy pleasures. For with Thee is the fountain of life, in Thy light shall we see light. Psa. xxxvi. 8, 9.

To see Thy power and Thy glory, so as I have seen Thee in the sanctuary. Because Thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise Thee. Thus will I bless Thee while I live, I will lift up my hands in Thy name. My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise Thee with joyful lips. Psa. lxiii. 2-5.

Blessed is the man whom Thou choosest, and causest to approach unto Thee, that he may dwell in Thy courts! We shall be satisfied with the goodness of Thy house, even of Thy holy temple. Psa. lxv. 4. They have seen Thy goings, O God, even the goings of my God, my King, in the sanctuary.

Psalm lxviii. 24.

Blessed are they that dwell in Thy house! they will still be praising Thee. For a day in Thy courts is better than a thousand; I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory.

Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound! they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of Thy countenIn Thy name shall they rejoice all the day, and in Thy righteousness shall they be exalted. Psalm lxxxix. 15, 16. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. Psa. xcii. 13.

I sat down under His shadow with great delight, and His fruit was sweet to my taste. Cant. ii. 3. With joy shall ye draw water, out of the wells of salvation. Isa. xii. 3. I am the Lord thy God, which teacheth thee to profit. Isa. xlviii. 17. They shall come up with acceptance upon Mine altar, and I will glorify the house of My glory.

Isa. 1x. 7.

Where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.

Matt. xviii. 20.

XI.-Of Grace against Sin and Temptation.

Of Grace to Mortify Sin.-Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? Hosea xiv. 8. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, and henceforth we should not serve sin. Sin shall not have dominion over you; for ye are law, but under grace.

Oh wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh, the law of sin. Rom. vii. 24, 25.

The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, hath made me free from the law of sin and death. what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Rom. viii. 2-4.

Grace against Temptation.

Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lusts of the flesh. Gal. v. 16. Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free [i.e. from sin. v. 34].

John viii. 32. Every branch that beareth fruit, He purgeth it, that it might bring forth more fruit. John xv. 2.

Grace against Temptation.-In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. Rom. viii. 37.

God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may 1 Cor. x. 13.

be able to bear it.

My grace is sufficient for thee; for My strength is made perfect in weakness. 2 Cor. xii. 9.

In that He Himself hath suffered being tempted, He is able to succour them that are tempted.

Heb. ii. 18.

The Lord knoweth how to deliver the gcdly out of temptations. 2 Pet. ii. 9. Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. 1 John iv. 4.

He that feareth God shall come forth of them all. Eccles. vii. 18.

To Preserve from the Enticements of Sinners.-To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things; to deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words. Prov. ii. 12, 16.

I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her, but the sinner shail be taken by her. Eccles. vii. 26.
