CALLED

NUMBERS.

INTRODUCTION.

THIS Book contains the history of the Israelites abelle and travels in the wilderness, for almost thirty nine years together, till all those were dead that came out of Egypt, except MOSES, JOSHUA and CALEB, and till they were ready to pass over Jordan into the land of Canaan. Several memorable passages are related in it; as, their being numbered not long after they came out of Egypt, and again, a little before they passed over Jordan, from which it is called Numbers; their encampment about the tabernacles the establishment of the tribe of Levi in the priesthood, upon occasion of Korah's rebellion; their sev• eral murmurings and seditions, and their punishments for them; how they were stung with fiery serpents, and cured by the brazen one; Balaam's curse turned to a blessing; their conquest of that part of the land on this side Jordan, and rules for the di vision of the land; God's speech to Moses concerning his death, and his successor JOSHUA; and cities of refuge appointed. All which are intermixed with the addition and explanation of sundry laws, civil and military, but chiefly ceremonial.

CHAPTER I.

The men of war numbered, and the Levites exempted,

A

ND the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of the congregation, from the mercy seat, on the first [day] of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of 2 Egypt, saying, Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of [their] names, every male by their polls, in order to pay the half shekel, (Exod. xxxviii. 3 26.*) From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel; thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies.

This people were numbered thrice by Moses. 1. Soon after their coming out of Egypt, Exod xxx, 11, &c. and xxxviii. 25, 26. 2. When they were to be set in order for their encamping about the sanctuary, Num. i. ii. iii. and iv. 3. In the fortieth year, when all this generation being dead, their sons were numbered to receive their inheritance in the land of promise.

17 And Moses and Aaron took these men, which are ex18 pressed by [their] names: And they assembled all the congregation together on the first [day] of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, 19 from twenty years old and upward, by their polls. As the LORD commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

20 And the children of Reuben, Israel's eldest son, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to 21 go forth to war: Those that were numbered of them, [even] of the tribe of Reuben, [were] forty and six thousand and five hundred.

"

and fourteen thousand and six hundred; far more than in any other tribe, whereby Jacob's prophecy was accomplished, Gen. xlix. 8.

40 Of the children of Asher, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that 41 were able to go forth to war; Those that were numbered of them, [even] of the tribe of Asher, [were] forty and one thousand and five hundred...

42

Of the children of Naphtali, throughout their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and up43 ward, all that were able to go forth to war; Those that were

44

numbered of them, [even] of the tribe of Naphtali, [were] fifty and three thousand and four hundred.

These [are] those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, [being] twelve 45 men each one was for the house of his fathers. So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all 46 that were able to go forth to war in Israel; Even all they that were numbered, were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty,

47

But the Levites, after the tribe of their fathers, were not numbered among them, because they were not to be employed in military affairs, which was the occasion of this mustering, (v. 3.) but only about the service of the tabernacle, (v. 50.) 48 49 For the LORD hath spoken unto Moses, saying, Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum 50 of them among the children of Israel: But thou shalt ap. point the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that [belong] to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the vessels thereof, and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about 51 the tabernacle. And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down: and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up and the stranger that cometh nigh to perform any of the offices mentioned, v. 50. 52 shall be put to death, (2 Sam. vi. 7.) And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and 53 every man by his own standard, throughout their hosts. But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel and the Levites shall keep the charge of 54 the tabernacle of testimony. And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.
