example to others, and in good time give up my account with joy. This I beg for Jefus Chrift his fake. Amen.

4. In a Storm, in great Danger.

Lord Almighty, look down upon thy afflicted creatures, who send up their prayers unto thee. Save us, Lord, in this dark and deep diftrefs. The waters know thy voice, O God, and though they now rage and lift up their waves against us, thy almighty power can make them calm. Affuage the ftormy winds, and let not our fouls melt away with trouble. Give us fortitude to exert our utmoft ftrength, and skill to preferve this ship, and conduct her by thy merciful arm to safety, that we may proclaim thy goodness and mighty works.

Suffer us not, O God, to be cut off from the living, and all our hopes to be fuddenly brought to an end. But if it is thy good pleafure that we now pafs into the regions of immortality, O merciful Father, forgive our fins, and receive our departing fouls, for the fake of thy dear Son, who died a painful death upon the crofs, to redeem us miferable finners! Thou knoweft what is best for us, and let thy will be done. O Lord, fuffer us not to perish! But whether in life or death, preferve us, for Jesus Christ his fake, the bleffed Redeemer of the world. Amen.

me. At this time, particularly, I praife and bless thy holy name, for the opportunity which thou haft this day given me of commemorating the death and paffion of my bleffed Redeemer, and also of partaking of his merits in the participation of that boly ordinance which he has appointed. Lord, pardon all the weaknesses and defeĉi's which I have been guilty of in the performance of this great duty. And I beseech thee affift me with thy grace, that in the whole course of my life I may ever be careful to fulfil and perform those vows and resolutions which I have made to thee, through Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen.

GENERAL RULE IN REGARD TO THE SACRAMENT.

Endeavour occafionally to call to mind what you have thought, and faid, and done, before, and at the holy communion. And beg God to affift you, that you may remember your Saviour with conftant gratitude, praise and adoration. That it may conftantly restrain you from all manner of wickedness, upon the affault of any temptation, thus bethink yourself:

At fuch a time I received the holy communion, and then I feriously refolved, and folemnly promifed to Almighty God, that I would heartily endeavour, in all points, to live like a Chriftian. Shall I then, upon any account, lie, curfe, fwear, talk profanely or obscenely, cheat, or

do,

do, or think, any manner of wickedness? No: God forbid! I have engaged myself to God to mend my life, and to be another fort of man. And what can I expect, but wrath and indignation from him, if knowingly or wilfully I fhould violate thofe promises which I fo deliberately and ftedfaftly made to him?

5. Thankfgiving when fafely arrived at

any Port.

Merciful Father of mankind, by whofe tender

providence I am brought in fafety to my defired haven to thy favor I afcribe my preservation. It is not in the power of man to preserve himself, or profper his best endevors; it is by thy goodness that we live and move, and hope for present and future bleffings. O Lord, give me thy grace, that as I live by thee, I may live to thee, and never more dishonor thy name, or abuse thy mercy. Let my gratitude and love afcend to thee, that my life on earth may be a preparation for that ftate of perfect blifs in heaven, where angels and faints praife thy glorious name for ever. Give me grace that I may never depart from thee, but fo incline my heart that I may live a fober and righteous life. This I beg through Jefus Chrift our Lord. Amen.

6. A Seaman's Prayer for Trust in God in time of War.

Lord God of Hofts, look down from thy glory on me a miserable finner! Forgive the offences of my past life, and inspire me with such refolution

in the discharge of my duty, that I may always face death without terror. Give me thy grace, that I may triumph over my moft dangerous enemies, fin and the devil; and ever worship thee with my whole heart. In the evening and the morning let me praise thee, and in the night-watch, when the pavilion of darkness is spread around, and the enemy meditates in fecret, make me watchful and calm, that I may repofe my truft in thy loving kindness and mercy. Give me comfort in the greateft danger, and in thy good time let me die the death of the righteous. This I beg in the name and through the mediation of Jefus Chrift my Saviour and Redeemer; in whofe bleffed name and words, I further call upon thee, Our Father, &c.

7. For a Seaman in time of Peace. GIVE peace in our time, O Lord, and let the

enemies of my country fall before thee. But if it fhall please thy providence to call us again to arms, give me health, ftrength, and resolution of heart. Let the renown we have acquired in war fo influence our hearts, that our gratitude may fhine forth as the ftars of heaven, and that in all our deeds we may glorify thy name: And lead me, O Lord, wherever thy providence shall ordain, that whe
