PREFACE

TO THE THIRD VOLUME.

HEY that know thy name will put their truft in thee;

"T for thou, O Lord, haft not forfaken them that feek

thee." Such was the rational fentiment, and fuck the pious teftimony of the Pfalmift; and such will be the sentiment and teftimony of all who know God, and live dependent upon him. The Editor of the UNIVERSALIST'S MISCELLANY feels his mind much impreffed with those words, which fully accord both with his experience and obfervation. It is now feven years fince he was convinced that God is Love, and openly profeffed this conviction by testifying the Reftitution of all Things in Chrift Jefus. Three of thofe years he has endeavoured to diffeminate this view of the Divine character by this publication, and cannot help congratulating himself upon that measure of fuccefs with which his labours have been attended, The doctrine, indeed, has had that monftrous Hydra popular prejudice to withstand. Carnal Reafon is a phrafe very common in the mouths of the profeflors of the prefent day. How these came to be united we know not. It has long appeared to us, that reafon is not carnality, and that carnality is not reafon. We think that reafon is in need of revelation, and that revelation is an address to reafon. To fuppofe there is no occafion for reafon because God has given us a revelation, would be as wife as to fuppose we have no occafion for our eyes, because God has given us
