We would, O Lord, thy steps pursue,
Thy bright example trace.
HYMN 732.

Wishful, when helping the pious, to be influenced by the fact that they are the brethren of Christ. C. M.

IGH on a throne of light, O Lord,

HIG

Dost thou exalted shine:

What can our poverty bestow,

Since all the world is thine?

2 But thou hast brethren here below,
Partakers of thy grace,

Whose humble names thou wilt confess
Before thy Father's face.

3 In them may'st thou be clothed and fed,
And visited and cheer'd;

And, in their accents of distress,
The Saviour's voice be heard.

4 Whate'er our willing hands can give,
Lord, at thy feet we lay;

Grace will the humble gift receive,
And grace at length repay.
HYMN 733.

Having received freely, wishful to give freely. L. M.

HELP us,

ELP us, O Lord, thy yoke to wear,
Delighting in thy perfect will;

Each other's burdens learn to bear,
And thus thy law of love fulfil.
2 He that hath pity on the poor,
Lendeth his substance to the Lord;
And, lo! his recompense is sure,
For more than all shall be restored.
3 Teach us, with glad, ungrudging heart,
As thou hast blest our various store,
From our abundance to impart

A lib'ral portion to the poor.

4 To thee, our all devoted be,

In whom we breathe, and move, and live; Freely we have received from thee; Freely may we rejoice to give;— 5 And while we thus obey thy word, And every call of want relieve, O may we find it, gracious Lord, More blest to give than to receive.

MISCELLANEOUS PUBLIC HUMILIATION
AND FASTS.

HYMN 734.

Prayer that the Divine judgments and warnings may be devoutly improved. C. M.

1

BEHOLD, O Lord, before thy throne
Thy mourning people bend;

'Tis on thy sov'reign grace alone

Our humble hopes depend.

2 Tremendous judgments from thy hand
Thy dreadful power display;

Yet mercy spares this guilty land,
And yet we live to pray.

3 And why, great God, are we thus spared, Ungrateful as we are?

O make thine awful warnings heard,
While mercy cries,-Forbear!

4 0 turn us, turn us, blessed Lord,
By thine almighty grace;

Then shall our hearts obey thy word,
And ever seek thy face.

5 Hear thou our prayers, and grant us aid; Bid wars for ever cease:

Heal every breach that sin has made,
And bless our land with peace.

HYMN 735.

Acknowledging that judgment is deserved, but hoping for mercy through the Saviour's intercession. C. M.

1 COME, let our souls adore the Lord,
Whose judgments yet delay,-

Who yet suspends the lifted sword,
And gives us time to pray.

2 Great is our guilt, our fears are great,
But let us not despair;
Still open is the mercy-seat
To penitence and prayer.
3 Kind Intercessor, to thy love
This blessed hope we owe:
O let thy merits plead above,
While we implore below.

4 Though justice near thy awful throne
Attends thy dread command,

Lord, hear thy servants, hear thy Son,
And save a guilty land.
HYMN 736.

National sin humbly confessed, and the Divine mercy

implored. P. M.

READ Jehovah, God of nations,
From thy temple in the skies,
Hear thy people's supplications;
Now for their deliv'rance rise.
2 Lo! with deep contrition turning,
In thy holy place we bend;
Hear us, fasting, praying, mourning;
Hear us, spare us, and defend.

3 Though our sins, our hearts confounding,
Long and loud for vengeance call,
Thou hast mercy more abounding;
Jesus' blood can cleanse them all.
4 Let that mercy veil transgression;
Let that blood our guilt efface;

Save thy people from oppression;
Save from spoil thy holy place.

MISCELLANEOUS PUBLIC THANKSGIVINGS
WITH PRAYER.

HYMN 737.

Praise for God's goodness as seen in the different seasons of the year. L. M.

1

ETERNAL Source of every joy,

Well may thy praise our lips employ, While in thy temple we appear,

Whose goodness crowns the circling year.
2 The flowery spring, at thy command,
Embalms the air, and paints the land;
The summer rays with vigour shine,
To raise the corn, and cheer the vine.
3 Thy hand, in autumn, richly pours
Through all our coasts redundant stores;
And winters, soften'd by thy care,
No more a face of horror wear.

4 Seasons, and months, and weeks, and days,
Demand successive songs of praise;
Still be the cheerful homage paid,
With opening light and evening shade.
5 O may our more harmonious tongue
In worlds unknown pursue the song;
And in those brighter courts adore,
Where days and years revolve no more.
HYMN 738.

Praise to the Giver of seed-time and harvest. C. M. OUNTAIN of mercy, God of love, How rich thy bounties are;

FOU

The rolling seasons, as they move,
Proclaim thy constant care.

2 When in the bosom of the earth
The sower hid the grain,

492

Thy goodness mark'd its secret birth,
And sent the early rain.

3 The spring's sweet influence, Lord, was thine;
The plants in beauty grew;
Thou gav'st refulgent suns to shine,
And sweet refreshing dew.

4 These varied mercies from above
Matured the swelling grain;
A kindly harvest crowns thy love,
And plenty fills the plain.

5 We own and bless thy gracious sway;
Thy hand all Nature hails:
Seed-time nor harvest, night nor day,
Summer nor winter, fails.

HYMN 739.

Praise to the God of harvest. P. M.

HE God of harvest praise;
In loud thanksgiving raise,
Hand, heart, and voice;
The valleys smile and sing,
Forests and mountains ring,
The plains their tribute bring,
The streams rejoice.

2 Yea, bless his holy Name,
And purest thanks proclaim
Through all the earth;
To glory in your lot
Is duty, but be not
God's benefits forgot,

Amid your mirth.

3 The God of harvest praise;
Hands, hearts, and voices raise,
With sweet accord;

From field to garner throng,
Bearing your sheaves along,
