Oft wond'ring how and where at last
The mystic scene would end.

6 They saw his heart transfix'd with wounds, With love and grief run o'er:

They saw him break the bars of death,
Which none e'er brake before.

7 They brought his chariot from above,
To bear him to his throne,

1

Spread their triumphant wings, and sang, "The glorious work is done!"

CHRIST HIS PRIESTHOOD AND INTERCESSION.

SEE

HYMN 112.

He reigns and intercedes for us.
C. M.
EE Jesus risen from the grave,
And now enthroned on high;
He pleads his merits there, to save
Transgressors doom'd to die.

2 Though robed in majesty he reigns,
Yet, by his power divine,

He frees us from th' oppressive chains
Of Satan and of sin.

3 Thus saved, may we with joy appear
In heaven before his face,

And, with the blest assembly there,
Sing his redeeming grace.

HYMN 113.

Crown'd with glory, not with thorns. C. M. 1 THE head that once was crown'd with thorns,

Is crown'd with glory now;

A royal diadem adorns

The mighty Victor's brow.

2 The King of kings and Lord of lords Reigns over earth and heaven

And praises far surpassing words,
Are ever to him given.

3 He is the joy of all above,
The joy of all below,

To whom he manifests his love,
And grants his name to know.

4 To them the cross, with all its shame,
With all its grace, is given;
Their name an everlasting name,
Their joy-the joy of heaven.

5 They suffer with their Lord below,-
They reign with him above;
Their everlasting joy to know
The myst'ry of his love.

HYMN 114.

He pleads for us before the throne. C. M.
EFORE the glorious throne above,
The great Redeemer stands;
There pleads his all-atoning blood,-
His wounded side and hands.

2 There, as a Lamb, but newly slain,
For us he now appears,

And all the scars which he received
His glorious body bears.

3 An everlasting Priesthood, he,-
For us, has now obtain'd,-
Whose garments with his precious blood,
Were once so deeply stain❜d.

4 Because he lives, we also live,
And shall in glory reign;

To fit our souls for that blest state,
The Lamb of God was slain.

HYMN 115.

Our Advocate with the Father. L. M.

JESUS, my Advocate above,

My Friend before the throne of Love, If now for me prevails thy prayer, If now I find thee pleading there,— 2 If thou the secret wish convey, And sweetly prompt my heart to pray,— Hear, and my weak petitions join, Almighty Advocate, to thine. 3 Jesus, my heart's desire obtain; My earnest suit present and gain; My fulness of corruption show; The knowledge of myself bestow. 4 Save me from death; from hell set free; Death, hell, are but the want of thee: My life, my only heaven thou art ; Olet thy presence fill my heart.

HYMN 116.

His glorious advocacy on high. S. M.

LORD, how shall sinners dare
Look up to thine abode?
Or offer their imperfect prayer,
Before thee, holy God?

2 Bright terrors guard thy seat,
And glories veil thy face;
Yet mercy calls us to thy feet,
And to thy throne of

grace.

3 My soul, with steadfast eye

See where thy Saviour stands,The glorious Advocate on high, With incense in his hands.

4 Teach my weak heart, O Lord, With faith to call thee mine;

1

Bid me pronounce the blissful word—
Father-with joy divine.
HYMN 117.

His blood speaking on our behalf. P.M.

FATHER, hear the blood of Jesus,
Speaking in thine ears above;
From impending wrath release us;
Manifest thy pard'ning love.

2 O receive us to thy favour,-
For his sake alone receive;

Let us feel him now our Saviour,-
Let us by his dying live.

3 "To thy pard'ning grace receive them,”Once he pray'd upon the tree;

66

Father," now he prays, "forgive them ;"
"All their sins were laid on me."

4 Hail! our Advocate in heaven,
Urge thy prayer on earth begun,-
Father, show their sins forgiven;
Father, glorify thy Son!"

HYMN 118.

Our Prophet, Priest, and King. T. M.

OIN all the glorious names

JOIN

Of wisdom, love, and power,

That ever mortals knew,

Or angels ever bore:

All are too mean to speak his worth,—
Too mean to set the Saviour forth.

2 Great Prophet of our God,

Our tongues shall bless thy Name; By thee the joyful news

Of our salvation came,

The joyful news of sins forgiven,

Of hell subdued, and peace with heaven.

3 Jesus, our great High Priest,
Has shed his blood and died;
The guilty conscience needs
No sacrifice beside:

His precious blood did once atone, And now it pleads before the throne. 4 0 thou almighty Lord,

1

Our Conqueror and King,
Thy sceptre and thy sword,
Thy reigning grace, we sing:
Thine is the power; behold we sit
In willing bonds beneath thy feet

HYMN 119.

Our ever-present Friend and Guide. C. M.

JESUS, the Lord of glory, died,
That we might never die ;

And now supremely reigns, to guide
His people to the sky.

2 Weak though we are, he still is near,
To lead, console, defend;

In all our sorrow, all our fear,

He is our constant Friend.

3 From His high throne in bliss, he deigns Our every prayer to heed;

Bears with our folly, soothes our pains, Supplies our every need.

4 And from his love's exhaustless spring, Joys like a river come,

To make the desert bloom and sing,
O'er which we travel home.

5 O Jesus, there is none like thee,
Our Saviour and our Lord;

Through earth and heaven exalted be, Beloved, obey'd, adored.
