66 LOVEST THOU ME ?"

HARK, my soul! it is the Lord;
'Tis thy Saviour, hear His word;
Jesus speaks, and speaks to thee;

64

[ocr errors]

Say, poor sinner,-lovest thou me ?

I delivered thee when bound,

And, when wounded, healed thy wound; Sought thee wandering, set thee right, Turned thy darkness into light.

"Mine is an unchanging love,
Higher than the heights above;
Deeper than the depths beneath;
Free and faithful, strong as death.

"Thou shalt see my glory soon,
When the work of grace is done;
Partner of my throne shall be:
Say, poor sinner,-lovest thou me?"

Lord, it is my chief complaint, That my love is weak and faint; Yet I love Thee, and adore,

Oh! for grace to love Thee more!

HE DOETH ALL THINGS WELL!"

O LORD, my best desire fulfil,

And help me to resign

Life, health, and comfort, to Thy will, And make Thy pleasure mine.

Why should I shrink at Thy command,
Whose love forbids my fears!

Or tremble at the gracious hand
That wipes away my tears?

No; rather let me freely yield
What most I prize, to Thee;
Who never has a good withheld,
Or wilt withhold, from me.

Thy favour, all my journey through,
Thou art engaged to grant;
What else I want, or think I do,

'Tis better still to want.

Wisdom and mercy guide my way;

Shall I resist them both?

The poor blind creature of a day,
And crushed before the moth.

But ah! my inward spirit cries,
Still bind me to Thy sway;
Else the next cloud that veils my skies,
Drives all these thoughts away!

. BUT HOW TO PERFORM THAT WHICH IS GOOD, I

FIND NOT."

WEAK and irresolute is man ;

The purpose of to-day,

Woven with pains into his plan,

To-morrow rends away.

The bow well bent, and smart the spring,
Vice seems already slain;

But passion rudely snaps the string,

And it revives again.

Some foe to his upright intent
Finds out his weaker part;

Virtue engages his assent,
But pleasure wins his heart.

'Tis here the folly of the wise
Through all his art we view;

And while his tongue the charge denies,
His conscience owns it true.
