Then, when the solemn bell I hear, If saved from guilt, I need not fear ; Nor would the thought alarming be, "Perhaps it next may toll for me!"

Rather my spirit would rejoice,
And wish and long to hear Thy voice;
Glad, when it bids me earth resign,
Secure of heaven, if Thou art mine!

MY SOUL IS EVEN AS A WEANED CHILD."

QUIET, Lord, my froward heart :
Make me teachable and mild,
Upright, simple, free from art;

Make me as a weaned child;

From distrust and envy free,
Pleas'd with all that pleases Thee.

What Thou shalt to-day provide,
Let me as a child receive;
What to-morrow may betide,
Calmly to Thy wisdom leave:
'Tis enough that Thou wilt care,
Why should I the burden bear?

As a little child relies

On a care beyond his own;

Knows he's neither strong nor wise;
Fears to stir a step alone;

Let me thus with Thee abide,
As my Father, Guard, and Guide.

Thus preserv'd from Satan's wiles, Safe from dangers, free from fears, May I live upon Thy smiles,

Till the promis'd hour appears, When the sons of God shall prove All their Father's,boundless love.

"A FRIEND THAT STICKETH CLOSER THAN A BROTHER.

ONE there is, above all others,

Well deserves the name of Friend;

His is love beyond a brother's,
Costly, free, and knows no end!
They who once His kindness prove,
Find it everlasting love.

Which of all our friends, to save us,

Could or would have shed his blood?

But our Jesus died to have us

Reconcil'd in Him to God:
This was boundless love indeed!

Jesus is a friend in need.

When He liv'd on earth abased,

Friend of sinners was His name;

Now, above all glory raised,

He rejoices in the same:

Still He calls them brethren, friends,
And to all their wants attends.

Could we bear from one another

What He daily bears from us? Yet this glorious Friend and Brother Loves us though we treat Him thus ! Though for good we render ill, He accounts us brethren still.

Oh! for grace our hearts to soften; Teach us, Lord, at length to love; We, alas! forget too often

What a friend we have above:

But, when home our souls are brought, We will love Thee as we ought.
