It is affured at Hamburgh, that the courts of Vienna and London have refolved to ufe their good offices in order to bring about an amicable determination of the differences arifen between the courts of Petersburgh and Berlin; and they write from the former city, that the emperor's ambaffador, and Mr. Guy Dickens, have already had conferences on this fubject with the minifters of the empreís, who anfwered them, that her imperial majefty was difpofed to give her confent to an accommodation, upon condition that a reasonable fatisfaction fhould be given her for the injuries which she apprehended had been done her, particularly in regard to the detaining her fubjects who are in the fervice of his Pruffian Majefty. ITALY. His imperial majesty, as grand duke of Tufcany, is fallen into the modern fashion of fetting up a naval power. He fometime ago fitted out three men of war from Leghorn, under commodore Acton, which have made the tour of the Levant; have been at Conftantinople and Smyrna; and it is thought, were employed to open a trade immediately between his Tufcan fubjects and the Mahometans. The little fquadron is returned to Malta. The emperor has alfo abolish'd the old ftile in his grand Dutchy, where it hath till now continued, in the neighbourhood of Rome, ever fince Pope Gregory's reformation, which is at laft received. From Venice we hear, that the mifunderstanding between that republick and the courts of Vienna and Rome is at length adjusted; the patriarch.fhip of Aquileia being thereby to be abolifhed, and, for the future, to be divided into two archbishopricks, one of Udine for that part of the Trioul, belonging to the republick, and the other of Gorizia for that part of it which belongs to the houfe of Austria. FRANCE. The French king's edict for erecting a military school at Paris, was published the latter end of laft month; and as a fund for fupporting this fchool, the duty on cards has been doubled, and the revenues of all vacant benefices are to be applied to the fame purpose. A plan for building has been already prefented to his majesty by Mr. Gabriel, his chief architect, which has been approved of, and according to which it is to be fituated on the river Seine, a little below the invalids, to have above 150 toifes in front, and above 100 acres allotted for the building, and for the avenues to it, which are all to be planted with trees. S. the trial of the famous M. de la Bourdenaye was concluded, and being acquitted of every accufation brought against him, he was discharged from the Baftile after a three years imprisonment; a poor reward for the fervice he did his country. We have had lately an account of feveral new discoveries made in France, viz. That the Sieur Guittard had found out a compofition like that of which China is made; that a country furgeon had discovered a kind of agaric, or fungus, which ftops the bleeding in amputations, without tying up the arteries: And, that a third perfon had found out the fecret of piecing glass, without the least appearance of its having ever been broken or joined. We have the following acconnt from Farlus in Bigorre, near the Pyrenees. "About three weeks ago, a rumbling noife was heard several days fucceffively in the Pyrenees, which geatly alarmed all the inhabitants of that neighbourhood. This noife was fucceeded by feveral fhocks of an earthquake, which were alfo felt in the principality of Bearn: fince which they have had eleven fhocks fucceffively. And tho' the damage done thereby be not very confiderable, yet the confternation they have thrown the inhabitants into is fo great, that they flock to this city with their beft effects as thinking themselves fafer here. The noife in the bowels of the earth continues ftill, and is fometimes like that of thunder.-At Lourde, a fmall city in Bigorre, they had one fhock more violent than any felt by their neighbours, infomuch that a mountain was thrown down by it into an adjacent valley; the greateft part of which was filled up by it. Upon this, our Bishop judged it necessary to have recourfe to fpiritual means, and accordingly iffued a mandate for a fast of feveral days, in order to obtain a ceffation of these earthquakes." There have been two placarts of the ftates of Holland published at the Hague, in the first of which, they complain of the oppofition and maletreatment the collectors of their taxes have met with in the execution of their duty; declare all perfons concerned in fuch outrages, enemies to their country; and order their fifcal to profecute them; and they impower their collectors to stop and fearch all carriages by land or water, and to provide themselves and affiftants with arms for repelling force with force. And in the other they declare, that the oath taken by merchants and traders for preventing frauds, in the collection of the duties, shall be binding, till abrogated or renewed. TURKEY. They write from Conftantinople. that the captain-bashaw Hadgi-Bekir, is depofed, and fent back to Giddah, his former government, on the redfea; and the command of the fleet is given to Dourak-bashaw, governor of Conya, late mafter of the horse. The Tefterdar (high treasurer) has alfo been difmiffed, and banished to the ifle of Tenedos; and his poft is given to Mustapha Effendi, who was once but an under clerk in the treafury. The Kiaia-bey (head clerk to the grand Vzir) having been fo unadvised as to discover that he was not of his mafter's way of thinking, has likewife been banished to the isle of Mitellino; and is fucceeded by NaffifMuftapha Effendi, a perfon not noted for his talents, but remarkable for docility, which is all that is required by the prime Vizir; fo that for his own fafety he has been obliged to difplace fome of his moft dangerous 11 enemies, and it is expected we shall foon fee more removals. As to the affairs of Perfia, the troubles continue in that unhappy country. There is still a Perfian embasfador at the Turkish court; but it feems he has little to do there, or that his errand is not agreeable; for it was obferved three weeks ago that he had an audience of the grand Vizir, but in about fifteen minutes he rofe from his feat, and abruptly broke off the conference. Monday, February 18. N action against a milk-man, converfation with a man's wife, was tried at the king's bench. The jury found for the plaintiff 5 1. damages. Tuesday, Feb. 19. A committee was appointed, at a court of common council, to enforce the laws in being, SPAIN. At the feveral ports of this kingdom, they continue to fit out fhips of war with all imaginable expedition, and it is computed that his majefty will have 44 of the line ready to put to fea about the middle of April. Letters from Peru advise, that a deep cavern has been difcovered in a village called Urcos, about 15 miles from Cufco, upon the river Qui-Qui-Xana, in which were three coffins of mafly gold two inches and a half thick, wherein were depofited the bones of three kings. The inhabitants were not without hopes of finding fome of the immenfe treasures which were concealed by the fubjects of Atabalipa, when Francis Pizarro conquered that country in 1532. Wednesday, Feb. 20. It was refolved, at a general court of the fouthfea company, that the refolution agreed at the laft general court, is not intended, nor fhall be deemed to relate or any ways affect the claim the company has on the public, with regard to any of their demands on the crown of Spain, given up by his majesty for the peace and tranquility of this nation. Refolved, that this general court doth impower the court of directors to lay the refolutions which paffed the last general court, with what paffed in this general court, before the gentlemen of the adminiftration; and that they pursue all the means neceflary for carrying the fame into execution. Several hundred failors having miftaken the fenfe of an advertisement, inferted to procure a meeting to confult agents and managers, how to obtain a few bounty-bills; for which there were no proper vouchers, met at the Fountain-tavern behind the RoyalExchange, imagining themselves fummoned to receive money; upon their disappointment, that the advertifement was published by one who had before fummoned them, and raised two fubfcriptions, one of one fhilling, and the other of two fhillings and fix-pence a man; they were fo enraged, as to force the agent into a coach, and carry him to the lord mayor's.
