Preface, pp. iii-xii. Text, 79 pp. 21x12.5 cm.

Of the Philadelphia edition of this pamphlet there are copies in the John Carter Brown Library, the library of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and the Lenox branch of the New York Public Library; of the Williamsburg edition there are copies in the Washington collection of the Boston Athenæum and the Lenox branch of the New York Public Library.

Many differences may be noted in the two editions of this pamphlet, the first and most obvious one being in their size. The Philadelphia edition is folio, while the Williamsburg edition is octavo. The second difference is in the wording of the title-pages; the third, which a careful comparison shows, in the wording of the text; fourth, the addition of much matter of interest to Virginians in the Williamsburg edition.

The Williamsburg edition (pp. 75-79) contains the following additional matter: "The Indian Road as agreed to at Lancaster, June the 30th, 1744;" the agreement about passes for the Indians; "Copy of the Commissioners Promise delivered the Six Nations in Writing, at Lancaster, the 4th of July. 1744;" "Copy of the Pass for the Six Nations to bring the Convoy Indians thro' Virginia delivered them in writing by the Commissioners, at Lancaster. July the 4th, 1744;" "Copy of the Pass for the Six Nations to send Messengers, the old Road, to the Tuscarora's; according to the Proposition in Page 70:" "The Form of a Pass, proposed for the Warriors of the Six Nations, going through Virginia the New Road to the Catawbas."

Justin Winsor says that this publication is Cadwallader Colden's "official account of this conference and treaty," and that there was a London

reprint, 1745.

The Treaty is reprinted in later editions of Colden's Five Nations and in Minutes of the Provincial Council of Pennsylvania, (Harrisburg, 1851), vol. IV, pp. 698-737. The interesting journal of Witham Marshe, who attended the Maryland commissioners at this conference, is published in Massachusetts Historical Collections, First Series, vol. VII, pp. 172-201. The journal of William Black, secretary to the Virginia commissioners, is printed (edited by R. A. Brock) in The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, vol. I, 117-132, 233-249, 404-419; vol. II, 40-49.

This Treaty with the Five Nations, or Iroquois Indians, was held at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, June 22 to July 4, 1744. The Honorable Thomas Lee and Colonel William Beverley were the commissioners from Virginia, while Honorable Edmund Jennings and Philip Thomas, Esqr., represented Maryland. Governor George Thomas was present on behalf of Pennsylvania. By this treaty the Indians relinquished their claim to that great section of country in Virginia between the Blue Ridge and the Ohio River. The consideration which they received was 400 pounds, one half of which was paid in goods and the remainder in gold.
