Before the Holy Communion.

HOSANNA to the living LORD!
Hosanna to th' INCARNATE WORD!
TO CHRIST, CREATOR, SAVIOUR, King,
Let earth, let heaven, hosanna sing!
Hosanna, LORD! Hosanna in the highest!

Hosanna, LORD! Thine angels cry;
Hosanna, LORD! Thy saints reply;
Above, beneath us, and around,
The dead and living swell the sound:
Hosanna, LORD! Hosanna in the highest!

O SAVIOUR! with protecting care,
Be with us in Thy House of prayer,
Assembled in Thy sacred Name,
Where we Thy parting promise claim:
Hosanna, LORD! Hosanna in the highest!

But chiefest in our cleansed breast,

Bid Thine eternal SPIRIT rest,

And make our secret soul to be

A temple pure, and worthy Thee!

Hosanna, LORD! Hosanna in the highest!

So, in the last and dreadful day,
When earth and heaven shall melt away,
Thy flock, redeem'd from sinful stain,
Shall swell the sound of praise again:

Hosanna, LORD! Hosanna in the highest!

Before the Sermon.

THE advent of our GOD

Our pray'rs must now employ, And we must meet Him on His road With hymns of holy joy.

The everlasting SON

Incarnate soon shall be ;

He will a servant's form put on,
To make His people free.

Daughter of Sion rise,

And greet thy lowly King;
And do not wickedly despise
The mercies He will bring.

AS JUDGE, in clouds of light,
He will come down again;
And all His scatter'd Saints unite,
With Him in heav'n to reign.

Before that dreadful day,

May all our sin be gone;
May the old man be put away,
And the new man put on.

Praise to the SAVIOUR SON,

From men and heav'n's high host; Like praise be to the FATHER done, And to the HOLY GHOST. Amen.

Evening.

After the third Collect.

AND now, with shades of night opprest,
Our weary limbs are laid at rest,

The faithful soul shall wake and weep,
And unto Thee her vigils keep.

Health of the world, the FATHER'S WORD, By Whom our untold prayers are heard, Desire of nations, hear our sighs,

And raise us from our miseries.

Why do Thy wheels so long delay? Come Thou, and cast our chains away, And ope the heavenly doors again, Which Adam's crime hath closed amain.

Praise to the SON, Who cometh down
To make lost man again His own;
Praise be throughout the days of Heaven
TO FATHER and to SPIRIT given !

Amen.

Before the Sermon.

DAY of Wrath! O day of mourning!
See! once more the Cross returning,
Heav'n and earth in ashes burning!

Oh! what fear man's bosom rendeth,
When from Heav'n the JUDGE descendeth,
On Whose sentence all dependeth!
Wondrous sound the trumpet flingeth,
Through earth's sepulchres it ringeth,
All before the Throne it bringeth!

Death is struck, and nature quaking,
All creation is awaking,

To its JUDGE an answer making!

Lo! the Book, exactly worded,
Wherein all hath been recorded!
Thence shall judgment be awarded.

When the JUDGE His Seat attaineth,
And each hidden deed arraigneth,
Nothing unaveng'd remaineth.

What shall I, vain man, be pleading;
Who for me be interceding,
When the just are mercy needing?

King of Majesty tremendous!
Who dost free salvation send us,
Fount of pity! then befriend us!

Think, good JESU, my salvation
Caus'd Thy wondrous Incarnation;
Leave me not to reprobation!

Faint and weary, Thou hast sought me,
On the Cross of suffering bought me ;
Shall such grace be vainly brought me ?
Righteous JUDGE of retribution,
Grant Thy gift of absolution,

Ere that reckoning-day's conclusion!
Guilty, now I pour my moaning,
All my shame with anguish owning;
Spare, O GOD, Thy suppliant groaning!
Thou the sinful woman savedst,
Thou the dying thief forgavest ;
And to me a hope vouchsafest.
Worthless are my prayers and sighing;
Yet, good LORD, in grace complying,
Rescue me from fires undying!

With Thy favoured sheep, O place me!
Nor among the goats abase me;
But to Thy right hand upraise me!
While the wicked are confounded,
Doom'd to flames of woe unbounded,
Call me, with Thy saints surrounded!
Low I kneel with heart submission;
See, like ashes, my contrition;
Help me in my last condition!

Ah! that day of tears and mourning!
From the dust of earth returning,
Man for judgment must prepare him;
Spare, O GOD, in mercy spare him!
LORD, Who didst our souls redeem,
Grant a blessed requiem! Amen.
