"The Church's Temple, Light, and Lamb.

I

Jefus,

CI

the poor Sinner's Friend!
Moft wretched fhould I be,

Did not I fee thy ftreaming Blood
Flow freely unto me.

I fhould be fad and deep diftrefs'd,
And could not be reliev'd,

When Weakness, Faintings, feize my Flesh,
Each Part opprefs'd and griev'd.

2 When I do hear the dreadful Voice
From Sinai's flaming Mount,
And Death and Judgment call on me,
"Come bring in thy Account:"
Dear Saviour, this would fill my Soul
With Terror and with Dread,
Did not I fee on Sion's Hill,

That Lamb, which for me bled.

3 Oh how tranfcendent is that Grace!
Which Thou doft then bestow,
When nothing in myself I feel,
But Mifery and Woe;

'Tis then indeed, my gracious Lord,
Its Riches fhine fo bright,

It cheers and comforts my poor Soul
With its most glorious Sight.

4 O give me, Saviour, give me ftill
My Poverty to know;

Increase my Faith, each Day in Grace
And Knowledge may I grow:
Open ftill more the Mystery

Of Thy dear Wounds and Crofs,
And let me for this Happiness
Count all Things here but Drofs.

No. 1335.

Lamb crucified!
When once I efpied

The Beams of Thy Grace,

O how did I long for a Sight of Thy Face!

2 How blind had I been?

A mere Slave of Sin;

At once there came Light,

And rouz'd me from Death, and I knew it

not right.

I felt fuch a Smart

3

Around my hard Heart,

So

So flinty, fo proud;

And all on a fudden it melted and flow'd.

4

'Twas foon to me clear

What Friend I had near ;

I could not him see,

Yet ftraightway I thought him as fair as could be.

5 My Heart was on Fire

With Love's ftrong Defire;

It no where could move
Without feeling clofe its invifible Love.

6 How was I o'erpower'd!
What Peace on me shower'd,

As Jefus now came ?

And this e'er my Heart well discern'd his fweet Name.

7 But foon I him knew
By that bloody Hue

Wherein He was seen,

When he was up-lifted to fave finful Men.

8 His warm holy Blood
That Life-giving Flood,

Stream'd faft from each Wound;

To fee which I well nigh funk into the
Ground.

9 My Need I cou'd feel,
My Death and my Hell;

And

And fuch was my Cafe,

As if I too one of his Murderers was.
10 Then whisper'd the Foe
Who ftill plots our Woe,

"Sin's, Death's, and my Slave, "To us thou belongeft, and thee we will have."

11 Directly to Thee,
My Lamb! did I flee:
I funk at Thy Feet,

That Thou fhou'dft do with me, what
Thou fhou'dft think meet.

12 I yet was full shy;

Yet hop'd ftill that I

Thy Spoil fhould be made,

That Thou wou'dft be gracious, and foon lend Thy Aid.

13 Then well could I hear
In Heart as in Ear,
"Wretch finful and bafe!

Receive thou My Bleffing, ev'n durable
Peace."

14 Sweet Reft I then had ; And faw Thee right glad All ftudious, my Lamb,

To give my Corruptions and Filth to the

Flame.

[blocks in formation]

15 So gain'd I choice Meat,

[ocr errors]

Sweet Manna to eat,

And Drink that will laft;

Whereto, Lamb! Thy ownself Thou fanctify'd haft.

16 Thy red Stream of Blood

Death drown'd with its Flood,
Thy Water wafh'd clean,

Thy bleffed Mouth call'd me to be of Thy

Train.

17 When Satan efpy'd
What Blifs I enjoy'd,

He fretted and roar'd;

I let him fret on, and cleav'd close to my Lord.

18 Now only one Word,

Ne'er leave me, my Lord!
I know nought but Thee;

Thus Light's happy Heir I ftill am, and fhall be.

Ο

CIII.

Lamb! O Lamb! could I behold And keep my Eye ftill fix'd on Thee, The Tempter's Snares, tho' manifold, Could never fright or trouble me ;
