3 The Well-fpring therefore of true Wisdom this, And fince to us reveal'd that Myft'ry is, That have been ever, Whate'er of Science they could elfe discover, 4 Thanks to Thee for that Crofs's Knowledge, Lord, For Thou indeed thy Blood in vain hadst pour'd, If to fanctify us Ought elfe availed, Befides thy dear Wounds, if ought could be called The Soul's Support. 5 O! bleffed be ye Wounds on him beftow'd, Who is alone th' effential Son of God In the Father's Bofom; Who took our Nature, Because none could but one of human Order 6 Since He the Death and Punishment would bear, To which our finful Race obnoxious were, On fuch a State of Being he muft enter, O Saviour (of that little Flock the Head, Which thy ftrict Purchase is fince Thou haft bled; Which eternally was Thine by God's Verdict, But fince its buying by the Crofs's Conflict, Giv'n up to Thee :) 8 In this Confideration let us ftand, When melts with Fire the Globe of Sea and Land; When by God's own Torches The World muk perish, And all the Creatures in Difmay fhall vanish Before Thy Face. 9 We then at his Right-hand fhall fear no Shock, But into our Lord's Heart directly look, From Spear he fuffer'd, When he Death'sForces abfolutely conquer'd And all our Wọe: to When from our Tyrant he did fet us free; When of his pow'rful Interceffion He Made us be Partakers, And of all Graces; When When for himself he deck'd poor To be his Bride. Duft and Of this great Truth our Mouths fhall Wit- Until his Kingdom fhall unveil'd appear Her Sons fo num'rous, Shall fee the Footsteps of what he doth for us, With their own Eyes: 12: When all fhall mourn, who did offend this King, When those he interceded for, fhall fing; We fhall crave Mercy, And into our Tents fhall receive that Party In Time of Need: 13 When their frail Righteousness will clean. be gone, And nothing left the Mind to lean upon, (For then his good Actions One fhan't remember) When all their Strength fhall die away and wither, Their Wisdom too. 14 For therefore 'twill be found that we ne'er fhall Into that angry dreadful Judgment fall, Q2 'Caufe 'Caufe we did not truft in Work or Perfection Of ours; but only did our free Election Spy in his Wounds. 15 Write all this deeply in our Hearts, O Lord; Of that great Matter a full Sight afford, (So direct, that nothing May give us Trouble, Which perhaps wife ones to confound is able) The Sinnership. 16 So we will alfo in each Time and Place, The Word fo mighty of thy Patience prefs, Thy Suff'ring and Ranfom; And will admonish All who our Partners in the Fall did perish, 17 To go with us to heav'nly Grace's Throne, View the Redeemer's Heart, God's only Son, Why He fo did fuffer On the Crofs bleeding, And wherefore truly Torment fo exceeding He underwent ? 18 For this there must be fome moft weighty Caufe; And 'tis from hence the Church her main Theme draws; Therefore Therefore are we holy, And ftand, thro' one Thing, In the World upright, not ourselves defiling, He merited it. 19 Not that we better are, lefs vile had been Than others; we by Nature are mere Sin, Ev'n like the worst People, We are nought better,Our Right to Mercy in itself 's no greater Than other Men's. 20 He who to us his Crofs's Help did lend, Will likewife other Supplicants attend, For he's most defirous They too might profper; To draw ftill gently all Men to him nearer, His Office is. 21 This is what ought our Subject now to be, This fhould we preach, O Crofs's Church, to Thee, "To all Souls Succefs is "Promis'd by Jefus, Tis his chief Pleafure to relieve andblefsus, "His Heart's Delight." 22 What Wonder, fpeak of nothing else we can, But of the Sum and Price, and of the Man, Who fo kindly paid it Us Worms to purchase, |
