This is indeed what we believe; and the Reader will obferve these two Points chiefly aim'd at, and running thro' all the Hymns, viz. That Jefus Chrift is our Lord and God; and that thro' His Death, all, the whole World may find Releafe from all their Sins, and endlefs Grace,

W

We humbly thank our dear Redeemer, that he has fent his Spirit into our Hearts, téftifying of Him.* We are fure Flesh and Blood have not reveal'd these Truths unto us and we rejoice to find, that it is Life to our Souls, to have the Son, and to believe on Him, and to perceive that the Wrath of God dath not abide upon us.

Our Brethren and Sifters who have made thefe Hymns, are mostly fimple and unlearned People, who have wrote them down at the Time, when the Matters therein exprefs'd were lively to their Hearts; and therefore they are without Art, or the Niceties ufually expected in Poetry: Yet notwithstanding to every Heart that knows, or defires to know Jefus Chrift, we doubt not but they will afford fome Satisfaction and Comfort of a much better Kind.

O F

HYMN S.

A

HYMN I.

H! who is this appears to me

With five wide gaping Wounds,
His Body mark'd with Blows and Stripes,
And Thorn his Fore-head crowns?
It is no Spirit to affright,

And fill my Flesh with Dread,

No 'tis my Jefus crucify'd,

Who for my Sins thus bled.

2 Appear before me evermore
In this red mangled Hue!

And follow me where'er I turn,
Still closely me pursue.

B.

Embrace

Embrace me faft within Thy Arms,
Thou Bridegroom of my Soul,
And let Thy Blood besprinkle me
From ev'ry pierced Hole.

3 O bring my Heart to know thy Love
In all that bitter Pain,

Which wounded Thee, and bruis'd Thee fo My finful Soul to gain.

Sweet Jefus, make me poor

And let me nothing know,

and meek,

But that Thou hast been crucify'd:
Thy Blood will keep me low!

II.

Fter the Labours of Thy Life,

'A' Thou, Jefu, on the Crofs did'ft die;

Thou fuff' redit much on our Behalf,

And did't Thou merit nought thereby ? Forbid that Thought! Thy Blood indeed Has purchas'd ev'ry Grace we need. 2 We need not lie in Chains of Sin,

In fear and Darkness all our Days; If but our Hearts have Thee within,

Our Mouths can gladly found thy Praise : Numbers of Slaves Thou haft made free, For where Grace is, there's Liberty.

3 There's

3 There's fome strange Virtue in Thy Death,
Which may we daily more difcern;
Something that can a new Life breath
Into the Soul, and make it burn:
Thank him all ye who know indeed

This Truth, that He did for you bleed. 4 You, who were Slaves of Sin before, The Saying chearfully repeat: "Thou, Lord, for Love of us haft bore "Contempt and Pain, and bloody Sweat, "Our Souls from Sin and Hell to free, "And win our Hearts to follow Thee!

III.

LL Glory be to God on high!
Ye Sons of Adam fill the Sky
With Praife and Thankfulness:
God from an everlasting Love,
Decreed with his dear Son above,
A finful World to blefs.

2 Stand ftill and fee what God hath done
He had but one beloved Son,
And him He freely gave:

For whom was this? but for a Race
Of curfed Sinners, vile and base ;
Yet All He came to fave.

3 All Glory to th' Eternal Son,
That He most freely did put on
Our Flesh and Mifery :
