"I died for thy Reft,

"Be chearful, tho' finful,and lean on my Breast.' 9 If we know him thus, Each Member of ús

Should gladly look round,

Where hundred or thousand loft Sheep might be found.

10 A Labourers Choir

Should burn with Defire,

To bring many Souls

To Jefus, the Sinner's Friend's thorow-pierc'd Holes.

11 If therefore we find

The Lame or the Blind,
We'll beg our dear Lamb,

To prove and to glorify on them his Name. 12 If any be fick,

Then we will be quick,

That Blood to apply,

Which cureth each Sickness, that not one can

die.

[blocks in formation]

And then we'll proclaim

That Jefus, who is our dear High-prieft and
Lamb.

14 The Dead fhall perceive
The Son's Voice and live;

What Wonders are here!

Come, Come let us ferve him, who bought us fo dear.

15 Dear Brethren, 'tis right, To wait Day and Night;

It is now his Hour,

He's ready to give us his Light, Life and Pow'r. 16 From this very Day

We will not delay,

To follow the Lamb,

To ferve him with Gladnefs, and live for his Name.

17 We will nought diffuse,

But this welcome News:

The Lamb has been flain;

This Text we will preach of again and again. 18 This entreth thy Ear,

O Bridegroom most dear!

Thou Lamb that wert flain,

O be Thou the Leader of us and our Train.

CXXIX.

HE Blood of Chrift by Faith applied
To a Believer's Heart,

Doth foften, heal, and purify,
And take away all Smart.

2 This precious Blood doth cleanfe from Sin, And wipes away our Tears,

It makes our Garments white and clean,
And frees us from all Fears.

3 The Blood of Abel Vengeance cried :
But Jefus cried, "Forgive,

"Father, they know not what they do,
"Forgive them, let them live."

4 The Father heard his Well-belov'd:
How could He Him, deny,
Who for our Sins upon the Crofs
Did fweat and bleed and die?

5 Ofweeteft Saviour, let Thy Blood,
That precious Blood of Thine,
Sprinkle and overflow this Heart,
This finful Heart of mine.

CXXX.

From the German.

No. 1202.

HE firft-begotten Son of God
Takes up with Mortals his Abode;

He who was fworn to Abraham,

Who ever was and is the fame;

He came, and hidden Mysteries reveal'd, Which from the World's Foundations were conceal'd:

2 Into which Things, with wifhful Eye,
Angels themselves defir'd to pry;

For they beheld Man's Wretchedness,
His Slavery and deep Diftrefs,

They faw him plung'd in Sin and Mifery;
But yet that Love was ftirring could they fee.

3 The fiery Law, that came between,
Was an Establishment too mean,
Too weak, Salvation to restore;

It Sin expos'd, but could no more,
It bid us Do, but could not Strength impart,
It knew to wound, but not to heal the Heart.

4 Then Love brake forth," Behold me still Prepar'd, O God, to do Thy Will!

66

"I freely come, I freely dye,

"For Guilty Man to fatisfy;

"I, in Man's ftead, will hang upon the Tree, "From Sin, and Death, and Hell to set him free!"

5 And thus for our imputed Guilt
Our Surety's precious Blood was fpilt;
The Sins of all on Him were laid,

And he for all has fully paid;

And now doth God for Children dear receive
All Sorts of Sinners, who on Him believe.

6 We dead in Sins and Trefpaffes,
The arrow Way to Life and Peace

Had

Had neither Will nor Pow'r to find, Nor was our Heart at all inclin'd To wish, or ask, that Happiness to know, Which only from the Saviour's Wounds can flow.

7 Out of pure Grace, unmerited, Salvation fhowers on our Head: Merely because the Lord has dy'd, Becaufe a Lamb was crucify'd, Are we invited to poffefs a Throne, Before the world was made, ordain'd our own. 8 Hence the good Patriarchs of old In Faith were confident and bold, They fpy'd their native Land from far, And with'd already to be there, With vehement Defire thereafter ftrove, As Pilgrims on the Eartli content to rove. 9 In Faith these ftedfaft liv'd and dy'd, Long ere the Lamb was crucify'd: We who in Faith's bleft Seafon live, We alfo heartily believe,

And in our Saviour's bleeding Wounds can find What they purfu'd with all their Heart and Mind.

10 Blood of my Saviour's Wounds! (how dear This Sound to each Believer's Ear!)
