7. Which executeth judgment for the oppressed :

Which giveth food to the hungry.

The LORD looseth the prisoners : 8. The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind :

The LORD raiseth them that are bowed down :

The LORD loveth the righteous : 9. The LORD preserveth the strangers; He relieveth the fatherless and widow :

But the way of the wicked he turneth upside down. 10. The LORD shall reign for ever,

Even thy God, o Zion, unto all generations.

NOTES ON PSALM CXLVI.

Verse 3. The son of man means here, according to the Hebrew usage, the same as man.

Verse 4. His thoughts, i. e. his designs or purposes.
Verse 6. Truth here means faithfulness.
Verse 7. Judgment here means righteousness.

PSALM CXLVIII.

All parts of creation exhorted to praise God.

1. Praise ye the LORD.

Praise ye the Lord from the heavens :
Praise him in the heights.

2. Praise ye him, all his angels :

Praise ye him, all his hosts. 3. Praise ye him, sun and moon :

Praise him, all ye stars of light. 4. Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, And

ye

waters that be above the heavens. 5. Let them praise the name of the LORD :

For he commanded, and they were created. 6. He hath also stablished them for ever and ever :

He hath made a decree which shall not pass. 7. Praise the LORD from the earth,

Ye dragons, and all deeps : 8. Fire, and hail; snow, and vapor;

Stormy wind fulfilling his word : 9. Mountains, and all hills;

Fruitful trees, and all cedars : 10. Beasts, and all cattle ;

Creeping things, and flying fowl : 11. Kings of the earth, and all people ;

Princes, and all judges of the earth : 12. Both young men, and maidens; Old men,

and children : 13. Let them praise the name of the LORD:

For his name alone is excellent;

His glory is above the earth and heaven. 14. He also exalteth the horn of his people,

The praise of all his saints;
Even of the children of Israel,
A people near unto him.

Verse 1. In the heights, i. e. in heaven.
Verse 2. Hosts of God means here his angels.

Verse 4. Heavens of heavens, i. e. the highest heavens. -The latter clause alludes to the waters above the firmament; (comp. Gen. 1:7.)

Verse 6. Which shall not pass, i. e. which shall not pass away or be broken.

Verse 7. Dragons means here sea-monsters.
Verse 8. Fire means here the lightning.
Verse 14. Horn here is used figuratively for strength,
