fession, Prayer, and Thanksgiving: and to arrange them in regular succession, commencing the worship with a prefatory petition for the Divine blessing upon what is to be performed, and concluding with a petition for the acceptance of our prayers.

It may be right, perhaps, to observe, that a difference of opinion exists as to the place in which the Lord's Prayer should be introduced in family worship. Many think that it should be the conclusion of devotion, as that which sums up all our wants; others, however, think that it should form the commencement of worship, and, that being of Divine authority, it should precede all human composition. The place, therefore, which it occupies in this selection need not be adhered to in the use of these Prayers; it being merely introduced, as I have

found it for many years the most congenial to my own mind to use it.

If the attempt be found useful to any one family, it will be a source of real gratification; and my hearty prayer to Him who hath taught us to pray in his Name, is, that it may furnish an abiding help to all, who, in the words of Joshua, are ready to declare, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord 2."

O ALMIGHTY and most merciful God, Whose Blessed Son hath taught us, that whatsoever we shall ask in prayer, believing, we shall receive, we beseech Thee to have respect unto the prayers of Thy servants who are now met together in His Name; and as Thou hast consecrated this good day to Thy service, give us grace

so to observe it, that it may be the beginning of a happy week to us, and that none of Thy judgments may fall upon us for profaning it. Purify our hearts and affections by the grace of Thy Holy Spirit, and so vouchsafe to guide and direct our thoughts this day, that the words of our mouths, and the meditations of our hearts, may be acceptable in Thy sight, through Jesus Christ our Lord, our Strength, and our Redeemer. Amen.
