25 I am poor and needy: 5 Consider and hear me, Lord my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death: how long, Lord, wilt thou hide thyself?

make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O Lord, make no tarrying.

26 I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.

27 But I am a worm, and no man: a reproach of men, and despised of the people.

28 Allthey that see me, laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,

29 He trusted on the Lord, that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.

30 Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission;

31 Till the Lord look down, and behold from heaven.

32 My prayer is unto thee, O Lord, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.

LESSON CX.

Mr God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me?

2 O my God, I cry in the day-time, but thou hearest not; and in the night-season, and am not silent.

3 How long wilt thou forget - me, O Lord? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?

4 How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily?

6 I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee as a thirsty land. My spirit is overwhelmed within me: my heart within me is desolate.

7 Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.

8 Lord, I cry unto thee: make haste unto me; unto my voice when I

9 Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength.

10 Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.

11 But unto thee have I cried, O Lord; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent thee.

12 Lord, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me?

13 Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed.

14 My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O Lord, how long?

15 Return, O Lord, deliver my soul: O save me for thy mercies' sake.

16 Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.

22 In the day of trouble I sought the Lord; my soul refused to be comforted.

23 I remembered God, and was troubled: Icomplained, and my spirit was overwhelmed.

24 Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

25 I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.

26 Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity: for the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping.

27 The Lord hath heard my supplication; the Lord will receive my prayer.

28 I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon.

29 Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.

30 Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.

31 O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul: thou hast redeemed my life.

32 O Lord, the Hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed.

33 Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed: save me, and I shall be saved.

LESSON CXI.

O MY God, I am ashamed, and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.

2 Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day.

3 And now, grace hath been shewed from the Lord our God; for our God hath not forsaken us, but hath extended mercy unto us.

4 And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments, which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets.

5 And after all that is come upon us, for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us deliverance:

6 Should we again break thy commandments, wouldest thou not be angry with us, till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor escaping?

7 O Lord God of Israel, thou

art righteous, for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee.

¶ 8 I beseech thee, O Lord God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepest covenant and mercy for them that love thee, and observe thy commandments:

9 Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night.

10 We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgements which thou commandedst.

11 Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:

12 But if ye return unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.

13 O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, who desireth to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant, and grant him mercy.

14 Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.

15 And enter not into judgement with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

16 Remember me, O my God, and spare me, according to the greatness of thy mercy.

17 Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

18 Withdraw thine hand far from me: and let not thy dread make me afraid.

19 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant.

20 Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

21 The Lord is righteous, for I have rebelled against his commandments.

22 How many are mine iniquities and sins! make me to know my transgression, and my sin.

23 I have sinned greatly; but now, I beseech thee do away the iniquity of thy servant.

24 Icried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me out of the depths cried I, and thou heardest my voice.

25 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over

me.

26 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet will I look again toward thy holy temple.

27 The waters compassed me about even to the soul, the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.

28 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains: the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God.

29 When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.

30 Surely after that I turned, I repented, and after that I was instructed: I was ashamed; yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

31 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed: salvation is of the Lord.

LESSON CXII.

O LORD, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;

2 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgements;

3 Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

4 O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of face, because of our trespass that we have trespassed against thee.

5 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;

6 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us.

7 The Lord our God is righteous in all his works that he doeth but we have not obeyed his voice; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

8 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine on thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake.

9 O my God, incline thine ear and hear; open thine eyes and behold our desolation; for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousness, but for thy great mercies.

10 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do.

11 For since the beginning of the world, we have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what thou hast prepared for him that waiteth for thee.

12 Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righte ousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art wroth, for we have sinned.

[blocks in formation]

15 But now, O Lord, thou art our Father; we are the clay, and thou our potter, and we all are the work of thy hand.

16 Be not wroth very sore, O Lord, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people.

¶ 17 O God, thou hast cast us off, thou hast scattered us, thou hast been displeased: O turn thyself to us again.

18 Thou hast made the earth to tremble; thou hast broken it heal the breaches thereof, for it shaketh.

salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake.

25 Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul loathed Zion? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold, trouble.

26 We acknowledge, O Lord, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against thee.

27 Do not abhor us, for thy name's sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.

28 Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art thou not he, O Lord our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.

29 O Lord, though our iniquities testify against us, deliver us, for thy name's sake: for our backslidings are many, we have sinned against thee.

30 O the Hope of Israel, the Saviour thereof in time of trouble; why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man, that turneth aside to tarry for a night?

31 Why shouldest thou be as a man astonished, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O Lord, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name: leave us not.
