thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations:

18 Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way, neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.

19 Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.

20 Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.

21 Moreover, thou gavest them kingdoms, and nations, and didst divide them into corners; so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

22 Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers that they should go in to possess it.

23 So the children went in, and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.

24 And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods;

wells digged, vineyards, and olive-yards, and fruit-trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness.

25 Nevertheless, they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets, which testified against them, to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations.

26 Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them, and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven: and ac

cording to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.

27 But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee : therefore leftest thou them in the hands of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven, and many times didst thou deliver them, according to thy mercies:

28 And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgements, which if a man do, he shall live in them; and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.

29 Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.

30 Nevertheless, for thy great mercies' sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God.

31 Now, therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy; let not all the trouble seem little before thee that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.

32 Howbeit, thou art just in all that is brought upon us: for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly.

33 Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.

34 For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.

35 Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers, to eat the fruit thereof and the

good thereof, behold, we are servants in it.

36 And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins : also they have dominion over our bodies and over our cattle at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.

37 And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests seal unto it.

LESSON CXXXVI.

Song of Moses.

THEN sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the Lord, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

:

2 The Lord is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him.

3 The Lord is a man of war: the Lord is his name.

4 Pharaoh's chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea.

5 The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone.

6 Thy right hand, O Lord, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the enemy.

7 And in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee:

thou sentest forth thy wrath, which consumed them as stubble.

8 And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.

9 The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.

10 Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty

waters.

11 Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

12 Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them.

13 Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.

14 The people shall hear, and be afraid : sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina.

15 Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.

16 Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people

pass over, O Lord, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.

17 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O Lord, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established.

18 The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.

19 For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the Lord brought again the waters of the sea upon them but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the

sea.

the rain my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herbs, and as the showers upon the grass.

4 Because I will publish the name of the Lord; ascribe ye greatness unto our God.

5 He is the rock, his work is perfect for all his ways are judgement: a God of truth, and without iniquity, just and right is he.

6 They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.

7 Do ye thus requite the Lord, O foolish people, and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?

8 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee.

9 When the Most High diIvided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people, according to the number of the children of Israel.

10 For the Lord's portion is his people: Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

11 He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.

12 As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings;

13 So the Lord alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.

14 He made him ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields; and he made him to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock;

15 Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys didst thou eat, and thou didst drink the pure blood of the grape.

16 But Jesurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness: then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

17 They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger.

18 They sacrificed unto devils, not to God: to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.

19 Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.

20 And when the Lord saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.

21 And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.

22 They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not god, they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people, I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

23 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.

24 I will heap mischiefs upon them, I will spend mine arrows upon them.

25 They shall be burnt with hunger and devoured with burning heat and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust..

26 The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs.

27 I said, I would scatter them into corners, I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men ;

28 Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely, and lest they should say, Our hand is high, and the Lord hath not done all this.

29 For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them.

30 O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!

31 How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thou sand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the Lord had shut them up?

32 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.

33 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter:

34 Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.

35 Is not this laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures?

36 To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.

37 For the Lord shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants; when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left.

38 And he shall say, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted,

39 Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink-offerings? let them rise up and help you, and be your protection.

:

40 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no God with me I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.

41 For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever.
