that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

LESSON CLXXI.

THERE shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.

2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him; the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord:

3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord, and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears.

4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion, and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them:

7 And the cow and the bear shall feed, their young ones shall lie down together, and the lion shall eat straw like the

OX:

8 And the sucking child

shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice den.

9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. i

10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek, and his rest shall be glorious.

¶ 11 The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.

12 It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing: the glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon: they shall see the glory of the Lord, and the excellency of our God.

¶ 13 Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees.

14 Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense; he will come, and save you.

15 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.

16 Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.

17 And the parched ground

shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes.

18 And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called the way of holiness: the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those : the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.

19 No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon; it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there.

20. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs, and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness; and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

21 Comfort ye, comfort ye, my people, saith your God.

22 Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins.

23 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a high-way for our God.

24 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain.

25 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the

mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

¶ 26 O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain: O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength, lift it up, be not afraid: say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God.

27 Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him : behold his reward is with him, and his work before him.

28 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

LESSON CLXXII.

WHO hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

:

4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised

for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one his own way: and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

8 He was taken from prison and from judgement: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: When thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgress

ors.

13 Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

14 As many were astonished at thee; his visage was SO marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

15 So shall he sprinkle many nations the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see, and that which they had not heard shall they consider.

LESSON CLXXIII.

ARISE, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

2 For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.

3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

4 Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side.

5 Then thou shalt see, and flow together; and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto

thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.

6 And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee.

7 Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought.

8 For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.

9 The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the fir-tree, the pine-tree, and the box together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary and I will make the place of my feet glorious.

:

10 The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The city of the Lord, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel. ¶11 Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations, and thou shalt know that I the Lord am thy saviour and thy redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

12 For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors righteousness.

13 Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.

14 The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee; but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.

15 Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.

16 Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.

17 A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation. I the Lord will hasten it in his time.

LESSON CLXXIV.

BEHOLD my Servant, whom I uphold; mine elect in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him; he shall bring forth judgement to the Gentiles.

2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.

3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgement unto truth.

4 He shall not fail, nor be

discouraged, till he have set judgement in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law. 5 He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass; as showers that water the earth.

6 In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.

7 He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.

8 They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.

9 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: and the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.

10 Yea, all kings shall fall down before him, all nations shall serve him.

11 For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper.

12 He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.

13 He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.

14 His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun : and men shall be blessed in him all nations shall call him blessed.

15 And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon it in truth, in the tabernacle of David, judging

and seeking judgement, and hasting righteousness.

16 And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.

LESSON CLXXV.

REJOICE greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem, behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

2 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle-bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.

T3 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the Lord.

4 And many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto thee.

5 And the Lord shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again.

¶6 Be silent, O all flesh, before the Lord: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.
