15 And give you all an heart to serve him, and to do his will, with a good courage and a willing mind;

16 And open your hearts to his law and commandments, and send you peace,

17 And hear your prayers, and be at one with you, and never forsake you in time of trouble.

LESSON VII.

O God, thou art worthy to be praised with all pure and holy praise; therefore let thy saints praise thee with all thy creatures; and let all thine angels and thine elect praise thee for

ever.

2 Blessed be God that liveth for ever, and blessed be his kingdom:

3 For he doth scourge, and hath mercy he leadeth down to hell, and bringeth up again: neither is there any that can avoid his hand.

4 Confess him before the Gentiles, ye children of Israel: for he hath scattered us among them.

5 There declare his greatness, and extol him before all the living for he is our Lord, and he is the God our Father for ever.

:

6 And he will scourge us for our iniquities, and will have mercy again, and will gather us out of all nations, among whom he hath scattered us.

7 He never withdraweth his mercy from us and though he punish with adversity, yet doth he never forsake his people.

8 If ye turn to him with your whole heart, and with your whole mind, and deal uprightly before him, then will he turn unto you, and will not hide his face from you.

9 Therefore see what he will do with you, and confess him with your whole mouth, and praise the Lord of might, and extol the everlasting King.

10 In the land of my captivity do I praise him, and declare his might and majesty to a sinful nation.

11 O ye sinners, turn and do justice before him: who can tell if he will accept you, and have mercy on you?

¶ 12 I will extol my God, and my soul shall praise the King of heaven, and shall rejoice in his greatness.

13 Let all men speak, and let all praise him for his righteous

[blocks in formation]

17 Rejoice and be glad for the children of the just for they shall be gathered together, and shall bless the Lord of the just.

18 O blessed are they which love thee, for they shall rejoice in thy peace: blessed are they which have been sorrowful for all thy scourges; for they shall rejoice for thee, when they have seen all thy glory, and shall be glad for ever.

19 Let my soul bless God the great King.

20 Blessed art thou, O God of our fathers, and blessed is thy holy and glorious name for ever; let the heavens bless thee, and all thy creatures.

21 Sing a song of praise, bless the Lord in all his works.

22 Magnify his name, and shew forth his praise with the songs of your lips, and with harps, and in praising him ye shall say after this manner:

23 Bless God, praise him, and magnify him, and praise him for the things which he hath done unto you in the sight of all that live. It is good to praise God, and exalt his name, and honourably to shew forth the works of God; therefore be not slack to praise him.

24 All the works of the Lord are exceeding good, and whatsoever he commandeth shall be accomplished in due season.

25 And none may say, What is this? wherefore is that? for at time convenient they shall all be sought out.

26 At his commandment the waters stood as an heap, and at the words of his mouth the receptacles of waters.

27 At his commandment is done whatsoever pleaseth him; and none can hinder when he will save.

28 A man need not to say, What is this? wherefore is that? for he hath made all things for their uses.

29 All the works of the Lord are good: and he will give every needful thing in due season.

30 So that a man cannot say, This is worse than that: for in time they shall all be well approved.

31 And therefore praise ye the Lord with the whole heart and mouth, and bless the name of the Lord.

32 Bless the Lord thy God alway, and desire of him that thy ways may be directed, and that all thy paths and counsels may prosper: for every nation hath not counsel; but the Lord himself giveth all good things, and he humbleth whom he will, as he will.

33 As his mercy is great, so is his correction also: he judgeth a man according to his works.

34 Faint not to be strong in the Lord; that he may confirm you, cleave unto him: for the Lord Almighty is God alone, and beside him there is no other saviour.

35 He filleth all things with his wisdom.

SECTION III.-God Allseeing.

LESSON VIII.

BEHOLD, the Lord knoweth all the works of men, their imaginations, their thoughts, and their hearts:

2 He seeketh out the deep, and the heart, and considereth their crafty devices: for the Lord knoweth all that may be known, and he beholdeth the signs of the world.

3 He declareth the things that are past, and for to come,' and revealeth the steps of hidden things.

4 No thought escapeth him, neither any word is hidden from him.

5 The ways of men are ever before him, and shall not be hid from his eyes.

6 All their works are as the sun before him, and his eyes are continually upon their ways.

7 None of their unrighteous deeds are hid from him, but all their sins are before the Lord.

8 Butthe Lord being gracious, and knowing his workmanship, neither left nor forsook them, but spared them.

9 The Spirit of Almighty God, which made all things, and searcheth out all hidden things in the secrets of the earth,

10 Surely he knoweth your inventions, and what ye think in your hearts, even them that sin, and would hide their sin.

11 The ungodly saith in his heart, Who seeth me? I am

compassed about with darkness, the walls cover me, and nobody seeth me; what need I to fear? the Most High will not remember my sins.

12 Such a man only feareth the eyes of men, and knoweth not that the eyes of the Lord are ten thousand times brighter than the sun, beholding all the ways of men, and considering the most secret parts.

13 He knew all things ere ever they were created; so also after they were perfected he looked upon them all.

14 The works of all flesh are before him, and nothing can be hid from his eyes.

15 He seeth from everlasting to everlasting; and there is nothing wonderful before him.

16 The Lord hath exactly searched out all your works, and he will put you all to shame.

17 And when your sins are brought forth, ye shall be ashamed before men, and your own sins shall be your accusers in that day.

18 What will ye do? or how will ye hide your sins before God and his angels?

19 Behold, God himself is the judge, fear him: leave off from your sins, and forget your iniquities, to meddle no more with them for ever : so shall God lead you forth, and deliver you from all trouble.

SECTION IV.-God Inscrutable.

LESSON IX.

THE Lord only is righteous, and there is none other but he;

2 Who governeth the world with the palm of his hand, and all things obey his will: for he is the King of all, by his power dividing holy things from profane.

3 To whom hath he given power to declare his works? and who shall find out his noble acts?

4 Who shall number the strength of his majesty? and who shall also tell out his mercies?

5 As for the wondrous works of the Lord, there may nothing be taken from them, neither may anything be put unto them, neither can the ground of them be found out.

6 Behold the heaven of heavens, the deep, and the earth, and all that therein is, shall be moved when he shall visit.

7 The mountains also and foundations of the earth shall be shaken with trembling, when the Lord looketh upon them.

8 No heart can think upon these things worthily: and who is able to conceive his ways?

9 It is a tempest which no man can see for the most part of his works are hid.

10 Who can declare the works of his justice? or who can endure them? for his covenant is afar off, and the trial of all things is in the end.

11 Number me the things that are not yet come, gather me together the drops that are scattered abroad, make me the flowers green again that are withered,

12 Open me the places that are closed, and bring me forth the winds that in them are shut up, shew me the image of a voice; and then I will declare to thee the thing that thou labourest to know.

13 And I said, O Lord that bearest rule, who may know these things, but he that hath not his dwelling with men?

14 As for me, I am unwise: how may I then speak of these things whereof thou askest me?

15 Then said he unto me, Like as thou canst do none of these things that I have spoken of, even so canst thou not find out my judgement, or, in the end, the love that I have promised unto my people.

16 Then answered I and said, I beseech thee, O Lord, let me have understanding :

17 For it was not my mind to be curious of the high things, but of such as pass by us daily: wherefore are our years few and evil?

18 For what profit is it for men now in this present time to live in heaviness, and after death to look for punishment?

19 And he answered me, saying, Do not thou hasten above the Most Highest: for thy haste

is in vain to be above him, for thou hast much exceeded.

20 The more thou searchest, the more thou shalt marvel; for the world hasteth fast to pass away,

21 And cannot comprehend the things that are promised to the righteous in time to come: for this world is full of unrighteousness and infirmities.

22 This present life is not the end where much glory doth abide;

23 But the day of doom shall be the end of this time, and the beginning of the immortality for to come, wherein corruption is past,

24 Intemperance is at an end, infidelity is cut off, righteousness is grown, and truth is sprung up.

25 For evil shall be put out, and deceit shall be quenched.

26 As for faith, it shall flourish; corruption shall be overcome; and the truth, which hath been so long without fruit, shall be declared.

27 And now renounce corruption, let go from thee mortal thoughts, cast away the burdens of man, put off the weak nature,

28 And set aside the thoughts that are most heavy unto thee; 29 And seek not to bind the counsels of the Lord: for God is not as man, that he may be threatened; neither is he as the son of man, that he should be wavering.

30 As the will of God is in heaven, so let him do.

LESSON X.

AND the angel that was sent unto me, whose name was Uriel, said,

2 Thy heart hath gone too far in this world, and thinkest thou to comprehend the way of the Most High?

3 Then said I, Yea, my lord. And he answered me, and said, I am sent to shew thee three ways, and to set forth three similitudes before thee:

4 Wherefore if thou canst declare me one, I will shew thee also the way that thou desirest to see, and I shall shew thee from whence the wicked heart cometh.

5 And I said, Tell on, my lord. Then said he unto me, Go thy way, weigh me the weight of the fire, or measure me the blast of the wind, or call me again the day that is past.

6 Then answered I and said, What man is able to do that; that thou shouldest ask such things of me?

7 And he said unto me, If I should ask thee how great dwellings are in the midst of the sea, or how many springs are in the beginning of the deep, or how many springs are above the firmament, or which are the outgoings of paradise:

8 Peradventure thou wouldest say unto me, I never went down into the deep, nor as yet into hell, neither did I ever climb up into heaven.

9 Nevertheless now have I asked thee but only of the fire and wind, and of the day where
