THE
O L D TEST A M P N T.

Introduction—on the Excellency of the Holy
Scriptures.

LESSON I.

BLESSED is the man whom thou chastenest, O Lord, and teachest him out of thy law; that thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity. 2 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. 3 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. 4 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever : the judgements of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. 5 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey, and the honey-comb. 6 Moreover, by them is thy servant warned; and in keeping of them there is great reward. 7 Wherewith shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word.

8 Thy word have I hid in

mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. 9 I rejoice at thy word as one that findeth great spoil. 10 Thy testimonies also are my delight, and my counsellors. 11. The words of the Lord are pure words; as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. 12 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver. 13 Thy testimonies that thou hast commanded are righteous and very faithful. 14 I have seen an end of all perfection; but thy commandment is exceeding broad. 15 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. 16 Through thy precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. 17 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. 18 I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies as much as in all riches. 19 I will meditate in thy preB

cepts, and have respect unto thy ways. 20 I will delight myself in thy statutes; I will not forget thy word. 21 Thy word is very pure, therefore thy servant loveth it. 22 Great peace have they which love thy law, and nothing shall offend them. 23 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

LESSON II.

THE secret things belong unto the Lord our God; but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law. 2. When thou goest, it shall lead thee: when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. 3 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life. 4 What doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul; 5 To keep the commandments of the Lord and his statutes, which I command thee for thy good? 6 For this commandment which I command thee, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off:

7 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go upfor us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 8 Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 9 But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thyheart, that thoumayest do it. * 10 Behold, the heaven, and the heaven of heavens is the Lord's thy God; the earth also, with all that therein is. 11 Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee; and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the Lord thy God giveth thee, for ever. * 12 All my words that Ishall speak unto thee, receive in thine heart, and hear with thine ears. 13 Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgements, and his statutes : 14 Lest when thou hast eaten, and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt there1I] ; 15 And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; 16 Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the Lord thy God.

GOD THE CREATOR. 3.

• *|| 17 Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that as a man chasteneth his son, so the Lord thy God chasteneth thee. 18 Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, to walk in his way, and to fear him. 19 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 20 And these words which I command thee shall be in thine heart. 21 Thou shalt obey the voice of the Lord thy God, and do his commandments and his statutes. | 22 Know thou the God of thy fathers, and serve him with a perfect heart, and with a willing mind; 23 That thoumayestlove the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days. 24 Be ye very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law, that ye turn not aside there

from to the right hand or to the left. 25 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which the Lordcharged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. 26 Ye shall observe to do as the Lord your God hath commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 27 Ye shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God hath commanded you; that ye may live, and that it may be well with you. 28 Only fear the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you. 29 Fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and take good heed unto yourselves, that ye love the Lord your God. 30 Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man.

that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkIneSS. 5 And God called the light, Day, and the darkness he called, Night: and the evening and the morning were the first day. 6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. 7 And God made the firmament; and divided the waters which were under the firmament, from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament, Heaven: and the evening and the morning were the second day. 9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land, Earth, and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit-tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth : and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind ; and God saw that it was good. 13 And the evening and the morning were the third day. 14 And God said, Let there

belights in the firmament of the heaven, to divide the day from the night: and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years. And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven, to give light upon the earth: and it was so. 15. And God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. 16 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven, to give light upon the earth: and to rule over the day, and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. 17 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day. 18 And God said, 'Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. 19 And God created great whales, and every living, creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 20 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. 21 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day. 22 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the

earth after his kind: and it was so. 23 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind: and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 24 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let him have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 25 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 26 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. 27. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed, to you it shall be for meat: and to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. 28 And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the even

ing and the morning were the sixth day. 29 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 30 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made : and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 31 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work, which God created and made.

LESSON IV.

THE heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament sheweth his handy-work. 2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto might sheweth knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. 4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. 5 In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun; which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. 6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof. 7 The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.
