To be added to the Note on Matt. 18. 18

It can be little doubted, fays Dr. Lightfoot, that Chrift fpeaketh accor ing to the common and moft familiar Senfe of the Language. And fhews by many Inftances, that Binding and Loofing, in the Language an Style moft familiarly known to the Jewish Nation, fignifie to prohib and to permit, or to teach what is prohibited or permitted, what lawfu what unlawful. fatisfactory Knowledge. Things that are obfcure and intricate we pur fue with Eagernefs, whilft divine Truths are ufually difregarded, onl because they are eafie and common: or if there be fome of an highe Nature, they fhall poffibly be rejected, because they are above, or feem ingly contrary to Reafon, whilft we admit feveral Things withou Scruple, which are not reconcileable with Revelation; tho' revealed Truths be certainly Divine, and the other either no Truths at all, or a best only human. This Sort of Conduct is very prepofterous; for after all, true Wifdom and fatisfactory Knowledge is only to be had from Revelation; and as to other Truths which are to be collected from Senfe and Reafon, our Ignorance of them will always be fo much greater than our Knowledge, as there are a Thoufand things we are ignorant of, to one Thing we throughly know. (1) Joram was the remote, not the immediate Parent of Ozias; for among the Jews, the Children of Children were accounted not only the Children of their immediate Parents, but likewife of those who were removed feveral generations from them. Thofe who defire to be fatisfied why Azariah, Joah, and Amaziah, are left out, may confult Dr. Whitby and other Commentators on this Verfe. The Learned may confult Surenbufius on the texts cited out of the Old-Teftament in the New, who accounts for the Difficulties in the genealogy of our Bleffed Lord.

Jofas. 11.And Jofias (1) begat (2) Jechonias and his Brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon. 12. And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel, and Salathiel begat Zorobabel. 13. And Zorobabel begat Abiud, and Abiud begat Eliakim, and Eliakim begat Azor. 14. And Azor begat Sadoc, and Sadoc begat Achim, and Achim begat Eliud. 15. And Eliud begat Eleazar, and Eleazar begat Matthan, and Matthan begat Jacob. 15. And (3) Jacob begat Jofeph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jefus who is called Christ. 17. So all the generations from Abraham to David, are fourteen generations: and from David until the carrying away into Babylon, are fourteen Generations: and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Chrift, are fourteen generations. 18. (1) Some read, Jofias begat Jakim, and Jakim begar Jechonias.

(2) Dr. Whitby proves that Jeconias in the 11th Verfe, is not the fame Perfon with Jeconias ver. 12, but is indeed Jehoiachim, the Son of Jofias, and his first born. This interpretation, fays he, makes up the 14 generations exactly in the fecond and third feries; whereas they who make Feconias, ver. 11 and 12, to be the fame Perfon, leave only 13 in the fe cond feries, if Jeronias be added to the third; or in the third, if he be reckoned to the fecond: When therefore the Apoftle faith by way of Inference, So all the Generations froin David, until the carrying away into Babylon, are 14 generations ver. 17, he leads us to this interpretation; be cause this would not be true, were Jeconias ver. 11, and Jeconias ver. 12. one and the fame Perfon.

(3) What is here faid, is very confiftent with what St. Luke, Chap. 3. 23. records, where Jofeph is faid to be the Son of Heli. For Jacob was Jofeph's own Father, and Heli was his Father in Law, Heli being the Father of the Virgin Mary, to whom Jofeph was efpoufed.
