(1) The Hebrews, when they would fay a thing with the greatest Force. and Certainty, are wont to exprefs it both affirmatively, and negatively, as,He fball live, and not die; that is, he fhall moft affuredly live; fo here, All Things were made by him, and without him was not any thing made that was made; that is, he made all Creatures without exception, and confequently, he himself is not a Creature; because it is abfolutely impoffible that any thing fhould ever make it felf: But then, if he be,and yet was never made, it is certainly true that he always was, even from all Eternity. (1) If we confider what is affirmed both here and in the References, we fhall fee Reafon to diftinguish between the Divine and Humane Nature in the Perfon of Chrift. The Term Word, expreffes his divine Na ture: The Word being made Flesh, or Man, his humane Nature. He was of the Seed of David according to the Flesh, and he was the Son of God in fuch a Senfe as belongs to no other Perfon, and therefore God. This Diftinction is of great Importance in the Disputes that are unhappily on foot concerning the ever bleffed and adorable Trinity, for the removing many Difficulties, particularly fome that arife from Expreffions in this Gofpel, as where our Lord fays, My Father is greater than 1, &c. I will therefore add one Place of Scripture, which, without any Explication, feems to me to establish such a Diftinction, namely, thofe Questions Our Lord puts to the Pharifees, Mat. 22. 42,&c. What think ye of Chrift? Whofe Son is he? They fay unto him, the Son of David. unto them, How then doth David in Spirit call him Lord, faying, The Lord faid unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right Hand, till I make thine Enemies thy Footstool?
