ND the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jefus was there. 2. And both Jefus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. 3. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jefus faith unto him, They have no wine. 4. Jefus faith unto her, ь Woman, (1) what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. 5. His mother faith unto the fervants, Whatsoever he faith unto you, do it. 6. And there were set there fix water-pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. 7. Jefus faith unto them, Fill the water-pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8. And he faith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governour of the feaft. And they bare it. 9. When the ruler of the feast had tafted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was, (but the fervants which drew the water knew) the governour of the feaft called the bridegroom, 10. Ánd faith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth fet forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worfe: but thou haft kept the good wine until now. 11. This beginning of miracles did Jefus in Cana of Galilee, and manifefted forth his glory; and his difciples believed on him. 12. After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his f brethren, and his difciples, and they continued there not many days. 13

And the Jews paffover was at hand, and Jefus & went up to Jerufalem, 14. And found in the temple thofe that fold. oxen, and fheep, and doves, and the changers of money, fitting: 15. And when he had made a fcourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers money, and overthrew the tables; 16. And faid unto them that fold doves, Take these things hence, make not my Fathers houfe an houfe of merchandise. 17. And his difciples remembred that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up. 18. Then anfwered the Jews, and faid unto him, What fign fheweft thou unto us, feeing that thou doft these things? 19. Jefus answered and faid unto them, (1) Destroy (2) this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. 20. Then faid the Jews, Forty and fix years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? 21. But he fpake of the temple of his body. 22. When therefore he was rifen from the dead, " his difciples remembred that he had faid this unto them: and they believed the fcripture, and the word which Jefus had faid. 23.

(1) Thefe Words fhould be rendred, re shall, or, will destroy for our Lord does not bid the Jews to deftroy him; but he foretels what they would do, and what he himself would do, when they had destroyed, or put him to Death. Many fuch ways of Speaking occur in the Scriptures: As, Do this and live; that is, thou shalt live. That thou dost, do quickly; that is, you will do quickly, Joh. 13 27. So Mat. 12. 33. Make the Tree good, and the Fruit [will be] good; or elfe [you will make the Tree corrupt, and [fo] the Fruit [will be] corrupt. Our Bleffed Lord had an ut ter Abhorrence of the Fact of the Jews, and of Judas, and therefore cannot in any Sense be said to command them.

(2) Some think that when our Lord fpake thefe Words, herby fome Gesture, as pointing, or the like, fignified that he meant his own Body.

Now when he was in Jerufalem at the paffover, in the feaft-day, many believed in his name, when they faw the miracles which he did. 24. But Jefus did not commit himfelf unto them, because he knew all men, 25. And needed not that any should teftifie of man: for he knew what was in man.

HERE was a man of the Pharifees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2. The fame came to Jefus by night, and faid unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do thefe miracles that thou doft, except God be with him. 3. Jefus anfwered and faid unto him, Verily verily I fay unto thee, except a man be born again [Or, from above], he cannot fee the kingdom of God. 4. Nicodemus faith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the fecond time into his mothers womb, and be born? 5. prove, That by being born of Water, is meant, the being baptized with Wa ter; iffo, Baptifm will appear to be neceffary to Salvation in God's ordinary 7. Way; which ought to make us fearful of living our felves in the wilful Neglect thereof, and of keeping our Children unbaptized, when we may as well have them baptized. But we muft not fo limit the Mercy of God, as to affirm, that thofe cannot be faved who die without Baptifm, when the Omiffion thereof was not occafioned by their wilful neglect or contempt of this Ordinance. If we diligently ufe God's Ordinances, we may be affured that the outward Act will be attended with his heavenly Grace; fo that we fhall be put into a new and Spiritual State, and by the inward Operations of the holy Spirit, be born, as of Water, fo of the Spirit, and grow and improve in a divine Life, till we come unto a perfect Man, unto the Measure of the Stature of the Fulness of Chrift. It is a fad Truth, that there are very many Perfons who are baptized, in whom thefe Effects are not visible; but this is no Argument either against Baptifm in general, or against the Baptizing of Infants. For alas! how few are there who educate their Children according to the Precepts of the Chriftian Religion? How few are there, who, when they come to Years of Difcretion, do what every well inftru&ted Chriftian knows the Gofpel requires, as neceffary to our having the holy Spirit take up his Refidence in our Souls? Not to fay what vaft Multitudes refift the common Grace of God. This, I fear, will,on Examination,be found too true, both of many who were baptized at riper Years, and of many who were baptized in their Infancy, not to infift on those who fay they are baptized with the Spirit, and that therefore they need not Water Baptifm. (1) It cannot be inferred from these Words, that the holy Spirit refutes to afford his gracious Influences to any who do not grieve and quench his facred Motions; but the Meaning of them feems to be this: As we know not the original Cause of the Wind, or why it blows now ftrong. er, and then gentler; now from this Quarter, then from that; yet by the Sound thereof, and other Effects, we are fenfible that it is: So, though the renewed Perfon knows not the Manner or Degrees of the Operati on of the holy Spirit which produced the Change in him, yet the Change is perceptible by its Fruits and Effects, though he is not al ways able to diftinguifh the Motions of the Spirit from the inward Workings of his own Mind.

(2) Here the Son is faid to have come down from Heaven, in refpect of the Union of his Divinity with the humane Nature, and his fpecial Refi dence in it here below: And yet he is faid to have come down from Heaven, as ftill to be in Heaven: He that came down from Heaven, the Son of Man who is in Heaven, that is, in refpect of his Divinity, by which he is every where prefent: And he that came down from Heaven, is here called the Son of Man, by the fame Figure that his Blood is elfewhere called the Blood of God, the Apoftle afcribing that to one Nature which is proper to the other: This we take to be the most natural and eafie Senfe of this Text, and moft agreeable to the Tenour of the New Teftament.
