3039 MORRISON'S Dictionary of the Chinese Language, divided into 3 parts, I. Chinese and English, arranged according to the Radicals, 3 vols.: II. Chinese and English, arranged alphabetically, 2 vols.; III. English and Chinese, 1 vol. forming together 6 vols. roy. 4to. £9. 10s Macao, 1815-22 Priced, 1847, bds. £14.; Bunsen's copy, calf, I bought for £14. 15s; Earl of Munster's copy, calf, fetched, 1855, £12. 158.

* This laborious production includes all the characters comprised in the famous Chinese Dictionary in 32 volumes, folio, published in 1716. It has already become a rare book, the number printed having been comparatively small. The type is no longer extant, and cannot be reproduced but at great cost; and the patient, self-denying labour requisite for a new edition, mere pecuniary outlay cannot command. It would appear that there are only three English interpreters available for our use in all China. Mr. Wade and Mr. Parkes are worked beyond all reason, and, what is more to the purpose, they toil in vain to overtake the exigencies of the public service. Mr. Alabaster, a young man of some acquirements in Chinese, is in attendance upon Yeh. There is a Chinaman named Wang, and a Portugueze named Lozario. These are the only mouths through which we can communicate with this people. All the other Chinese scholars are, I suppose, engaged in their consular or their missionary labours. Where are the students' who are sent out with a salary to learn Chinese? Some say the experiment is yet so young that they have not had time to earn; others affirm that they are taken from their studies to do clerks' duties as soon as they arrive in China, and therefore never will have time to learn; and there are others who say that, notwithstanding the King's College examination, the choice is made with so little discrimination as to aptitude for learning languages that they never can learn. As to the cause I am not confident, but the effect is certain-they are not available in any number proportionate to the demand for their services.

"Where are the interpreters who were to be supplied by the Bishops' College, an institution that I believe has for some years received £250. annually for this purpose? It has never yet turned out one Chinese scholar. In the destitution which exists, I understand that some of the pupils of this College have been employed to interpret in the Police-Court. I can testify that their performance is most distressing to witness. A question from the magistrate is followed by a five minutes' wrangle between the interpreter and the witness or prisoner. I am told that their Chinese has the greatest possible degree of remoteness from resemblance to Mr. Davies's English, and it would certainly puzzle a jury of sphinxes to understand the English they extract from Chinese.

"If we are to have an extensive intercourse with China we must have a large staff of interpreters, who should be confined to their duties as interpreters."

"The Biblioteca Espanola of Rodriguez de Castro ;-an important work, whose author was

born in Gallicia, in 1739, and died at Madrid in 1799. The first volume, printed in 1781, folio, under the patronage of the Count Florida Blanca, consists of a chronological account of the rabbinical writers who appeared in Spain from the earliest times to his own, whether they wrote in Hebrew, Spanish, or any other language. The second printed in 1786, consists of a similar account of the Spanish writers, heathen and Christian, who wrote either in Latin or in Spanish, down to the end of the thirteenth century, and whose numbers he makes about two hundred. Both volumes are somewhat inartificially compiled, and the literary opinions they express are of small value; but their materials largely derived from manuscripts, curious, and frequently such as can be found in print nowhere else."-Ticknor.

Biblical Chaldee. From the Latin of William Gesenius, late Professor of Theology in the University of Halle-Wittemberg. By Edward Robinson, Professor in the Union Theological Seminary, New York. With Corrections and large Additions, partly furnished by the Author in Manuscript, and partly condensed from his larger Thesaurus as completed by Rödiger, fifth edition, revised and stereotyped, stout royal 8vo. pp. 1172, (pub. at 25s) cl. 21s New York, 1855 "The philologer, the Hebraist, and the independent inquirer of biblical truth, must resort to the American edition, mirroring, as it does, a pure reflection of the vigorous mind of the profound Gesenius, of which the English performance falls greatly short."-Jewish Chronicle.

"This is a very beautiful and complete edition of the best Hebrew lexicon ever yet produced. Gesenius has very prominent faults as a theologian, but as a Hebrew philologist his general soundness is unquestioned. His great work, the Hebrew Thesaurus, was partly posthumous, and former reprints of his manual, could not, therefore, contain the results of his last researches. All that can be done to make the work complete is here effected by Dr. Robinson; and, for matter, typography, paper, and price, this edition is all that can be desired."-Clerical Journal.

"This is decidedly the most complete edition of Gesenius' Manual Hebrew Lexicon. No former one could contain the last editions of the learned author, since his Thesaurus has only recently been finished. Everything of importance has been incorporated in this volume, and its size and price as well as the clearness of its typography, will make it a boon to Students of the Hebrew lan-* guage. It is a subject for grateful reflection that the sacred tongue is yearly receiving more earnest attention, and that the apparatus necessary for the prosecution of the study is more easily procured." Sulzbaci, 1677-84

This work is very difficult to be obtained complete with the piece entitled "Adumbratio Kabbalæ Christianæ," which ought to be at the end of the last volume; it is yet very much more rare with a treatise of 192 pages, entitled, "Liber, seu Porta Cœlorum," &c. Sold for 72 francs, La Valliere; 61 francs Maucune."-Brunet. Both the rare pieces are included in the present copy.

"That the Kabbalistic books are of the age and the authorship to which they lay claim, would be very erroneous. This was done, to a very great extent, by most of the earlier critics; and the sentiments of the New Testament have often been proved, by quotations from these and other Jewish books, to have been entertained by the pious in Israel eighteen centuries ago, while in fact all the Kabbalistic books are of a comparatively recent date, and some of them can be shewn to have been written under the acknowledged influence of Christianity."

Schauffler, Journ. Am. Or. Soc. Vol. 2, p. 13.

One of the most singular and complete works on the subject of the Kabala, and is much in request, not only on account of its rarity, but for the information it contains on that mysterious science. This copy is perfectly complete according to De Bure's collation, and also contains the 'Liber, seu Porta Coelorum,' which Brunet says is so rarely found with it. 3106 KIRSCH, Chrestomathia Syriaca, cum Lexico Syriaco, 12mo. hf. bd. calf, 4s 1789 3107 Chrestomathia Syriaca, Delecta historica, biblica, poetica, etc. cum Lexico, ed.
