The great importance of the Malay Language is scarcely appreciated by Scholars or Merchants. In the endless groups of islands scattered towards the South-Eastern Coast of China, Malay is the leading, indeed the only language understood by many discordant races; in fact it is one of ancient literary culture, and the universal language of commerce throughout the Eastern Archipelago. Even along near a thousand miles of the S. E. Chinese coast, Malay, not Chinese, is spoken. Of the political and commercial importance of the Malay-speaking population, see Crawfurd's valuable works, also an extremely interesting article, "The Maha-Raja of Zabedj," by J. 3301 STEWART'S Introduction to the Anvari Soohyly, 4to. hf. calf, 2s 6d 3302 ANVAR-I SUHAILI; or the Lights of Canopus; being the celebrated work of Husain Và'iz u'l Káshifi, translated for the first time into English prose and verse (on the same principles as the author's translations of the Gulistán), with an elaborate Preface and copious Notes, by E. B. Eastwick, royal 8vo. (pub. at £2. 2s) cloth, 24s 1854

"The most excellent book in the language is, in my opinion, the collection of tales and fables called 'Anvari Suhaili,' by Husain Va'iz, who took the celebrated work of Bidpai or Pilpay for his text, and has comprised all the wisdom of the Eastern nations in fourteen beautiful chapters."

H. Bleeck, 12mo. 288 pp. (published at 7s 6d) cloth, 5s Quaritch, 1857

"It is much to be regretted that the Court of Directors do not hold greater facilities to the officers of their service to study Arabic. There was abundant work during the late short campaign for at least 15 duly qualified interpreters, whereas there was only one in the whole force who could act in that capacity. No little inconvenience and great difficulties and delays were consequently experienced, especially by the Land Transport and Commissariat Department, whose agents, scattered over the country where Arabic is the only language spoken, was comparatively helpless. In Persian we were somewhat better off; but, even in this respect, there did not appear to be an officer present with the force who could indite a proper Persian letter without the aid of a native moonshee. This state of things, especially during a war, when it is frequently of the greatest moment to keep correspondence secret, is much to be deprecated; and it is accordingly to be hoped that steps will be taken to secure higher qualifications in our officers who pass in Persian, and who should be entirely independent of all native co-operation."-Letter from Mohammerah, May 17, 1857.

"Mr. Bleeck has furnished a most useful grammar for students of the Persian language. Those who wish to acquire that language rapidly, and do not care to plunge into the depths in which

the ponderous volumes of Matthew Lumsden are the sole guide, will find here all that they need. Indeed, we do not hesitate to say that the little work beforè us is in many respects preferable to Mirza Ibrahim's Grammar, which is said to have obtained for its author from the East India Company the extravagantly munificent guerdon of a thousand pounds. Iu particular the remarks on syntax may be commended, and the dialogues and reading exercises are very judiciously selected. In fine, the Grammar may very safely be recommended and deserves success.' -Athenæum. "Canterbury, St. Augustine's College, August 17, 1857.

"Allow me to thank you for the Persian Grammar. The new plan on which the reading lessons and dialogues have been arranged deserves indeed every consideration; and it ought to receive a fair and conscientious trial. There are some misprints not noticed in the list of errata (three in the Armenian text, one in the Sanscrit, and a mistake in the explanation, and a few in the Persian extracts), which will no doubt be suppressed in a second edition."-R. Rost.

This volume reflects great credit both on the learning and industry of Mr. Bleeck. The Persian Grammar contains 238 pp. and the remaining 50 are devoted to the exposition of the new method of studying languages, to which also the Persian Grammar is adapted. The former part of the work, the Grammar, is distinguished by its appreciation of the difficulties presented to learners, and by much success in removing or lessening them. We have compared this Grammar with that of Sir W. Jones, with which alone we are acquainted, and certainly it excels it in simplicity as well as in fulness; while the application of the Grammar to the reading lessons is of vast help to the learner." Clerical Journal.

excellence.

There are many points of comparison between Homer and the Persian Epic Poet; but we shall not enter upon the parallel, which would form a good subject for a separate essay, and would require a book to itself. One coincidence, however, may be noticed, as to the martial enthusiasm the verses of both poets inspire. "The Persian soldiery," says Mr. Binning, "when about to engage in combat, ar accustomed to sing aloud certain passages of the Sháhnámah, which practice has the

effect of inspiring them to absolute fury, as the verses of Homer did the warriors of Greece, or as the Runic lays of the Skalds were wont to animate the fierce Berserkars of Norway." 3315 FIRDUSSI's Heldenbuch von Iran, aus dem Schah Nameh, deutsch von J.
