"In every respect this is one of the most beautiful publications which has issued from the press of this country. A combination is here exhibited in the same work, which of late years has never been excelled. English and Scotch artists have both been called into requisition, and the result has been two such resplendent volumes as only Great Britain could have produced."

"The chief points or objects of this work are developed in the title-page; namely, bibliography, antiquities, and the picturesque. But it would be an unjust conclusion to infer that these beautiful volumes embraced no other subjects: for there is much of HISTORICAL RESEARCH, and more of SOCIAL INTERCOURSE ; the author having been made a welcome visitor at some of the most respectable societies in the North of England, and in Scotland. The P:CTURESQUE DEPART,

MENT tells its own tale, by a careful glance at the numerous and beautiful plates by which these pages are adorned."

Dr. Dibdin has been termed the 'De Bure of the nineteenth century.' How well he has merited this title, few who have had occasion to refer to his elegant volumes-and what lover of old books does not do so daily?—but will join heartily in the compliment thus conveyed. The science of Bibliography was at the lowest in this country when the Bibliomania appeared; and to it we are mainly indebted for the formation of those literary clubs in England and Scotland, which have added so much to our literary stores during the last twenty years. It has been remarked by a wellknown critic, that "no collection can be complete without Mr. Dibdin's volumes; which are, independent of the solid information they contain, frequently enlivened by literary anecdote, and rendered generally interesting by great variety of observation, and acuteness of remark."-Brit. "Notes and Queries is become now an established institution, being possessed of that great element of immortality, an individual character and purpose. When a man, or a book, or a periodical, has no strictly individual course, but is like fifty, or a hundred, or a thousand other new books or periodicals, he or it may live and prosper doubtless, but the time will also come when he or it must die. There may be three score and ten years for a man, three score and ten months for a journal, three score and ten weeks for a book; but the time still comes soon when each must go hence and be seen no more. Force of individual character is the sal sapientum, the turner of base metal into gold, the preserving salt that is alone able to save from decay whatever perishable thing it touches. This Notes and Queries has; and because it has this, we may boldly predict that it shall be savoury in the mouths of generations yet to come. Literary men, centuries after we are gone, will be taking in their Notes and Queries: and the books that shall be hereafter, will be made the richer for the odd and interesting and important Notes they furnish to the authors who contribute Queries for the sake of getting them."-Examiner, 28th July, 1855.
