PREFACE.

IN arranging the Epiphanies of the Risen Lord, the author is aware that there are difficulties in harmonizing the accounts of them as given by the Evangelists. Nor is it strange that there should be these difficulties. In the first place, Christ's risen body was an absolutely unique body, endowed with supernatural properties, and as such capable of moving with supernatural celerity, and therefore might have seemed to appear in different places at practically the same moment. Secondly it was a period of intense excitement among the disciples; they had suddenly and most unexpectedly lost their beloved Master: so absolutely were all their hopes crushed, that the thought did not occur to them that they would ever see Him again: accordingly, His sudden reappearance was to them a total, bewildering surprise no wonder that under such circumstances
