vens cannot contain thee: how much less this house which we have built!

Have respect therefore to the prayer of thy servants and to their supplication, O Lord our God;

To hearken unto the cry and the prayer: which thy servants pray before thee.

What prayer or supplication soever shall be made of any man or of all thy people Israel;

When every one shall know his own sore and his own grief and shall spread forth his hands in this house ;

Let thine eyes be open and let thine ears be attent unto the prayer that is made in this place;

Hear thou from thy dwelling place, even from heaven and when thou hearest, forgive.

HYMN XV.

The Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany.

1 Isaiah lxvi. 1, 2.
2 Isaiah lvii. 15.

3 James iv. 6. 10.

4 Matthew xxiii. 12.

1 Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool;

Where is the house that ye build unto me and where is the place of my rest?

For all those things hath mine hand made and all those things have been, saith the LORD;

:

But to this man will I look, even to him that is poor, and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

:

2 For thus saith the high and lofty One: that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit ;

To revive the spirit of the humble : and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

3 For God resisteth the proud: but giveth grace unto the humble.

Humble yourselves therefore in the sight of the LORD: and he shall lift you up;

4 For whosoever shall exalt himself shall

[blocks in formation]

Knowest thou not this of old : since man was placed upon the earth,

That the triumphing of the wicked is short and the joy of the hypocrite is but for a moment?

Though his excellency mount up to the heavens and his head reach unto the clouds,

Yet shall he perish for ever: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?

He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found: yea he shall be chased away as a vision of the night.

The eye also which saw him shall see him no more neither shall his place any more behold him.

The increase of his house shall depart : and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

This is the portion of a wicked man from God and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

HYMN XVII.

The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany.

Micah vi. 6-8.

Wherewith shall I come before the LORD: and bow myself before the high God?

Shall I come before him with burntofferings with calves of a year old?

Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams or with ten thousands of rivers of oil?

Shall I give my first-born for my transgression the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

He hath showed thee, O man, what is good and what doth the LORD require of thee,

But to do justly and love mercy and walk humbly with thy God?

HYMN XVIII.

Septuagesima Sunday.

1 Prov. xxix. 26.

2 Prov. xviii. 10.
3 Rom. viii. 31.

4 2 Kings vi. 16.
5 Prov. xxi. 30, 31.
6 Prov. iii. 25, 26.

1 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.

2 The name of the LORD is a strong tower the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

us?

4

If God be for us who can be against

They that be with us are more than they that be with them.

5

There is no wisdom nor understanding : nor counsel against the LORD.

The horse is prepared against the day of battle but safety is of the Lord.

6

:

Be not afraid of sudden fear neither of the desolation of the wicked when it cometh.

For the LORD shall be thy confidence: and shall keep thy foot from being taken.
