11 And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in 12 it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. And when ye 13 come into an house, salute it. And if the house be worthy, let

(said Jesus to his disciples) eating and drinking such things as they give, for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Lu. x. 7. Have we not power to eat and to drink? have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working? 1 Co. ix. 4, 5, 6. See verse 9. Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things. Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap. Ga. vi. 6, 7. Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. For the Scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn: and the labourer is worthy of his reward. 1 Ti. v. 17, 18.

11 Enquire who in it is worthy.] And there came two angels to Sodom at even, and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom. And Lot seeing them, rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early and go on your ways. And he pressed upon them greatly, and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house. And he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. Ge. xix. 1, 2, 3. And behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of Mount Ephraim, and he sojourned in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites. And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou? And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehem-Judah toward the side of Mount Ephraim, from thence am I; and I went to Bethlehem-Judah, but I am now going to the house of the Lord, and there is no man that receiveth me to house. Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses, and there is bread and wine also for me and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing. And the old man said, Peace be with thee. Howsoever, let all thy wants lie upon me, only lodge not in the street. So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses, and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink. Ju. xix. 16-21. Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee. 1 Ki. xvii. 9.

The stranger did not lodge in the street; but I opened my doors to the traveller. Job xxxi. 32. It came to pass, that he (Jesus) entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered, and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful about many things, but one thing is needful; and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. Lu. x. 38-42. And when "they" ("the Jews") saw it (that he, Jesus, visited Zaccheus the publican), they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. L. xix. 7. And when she (Lydia, a seller of purple of Thyatira) was baptized, and her household, she besought us (Paul and Tinothy), saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us. Ac. xvi. 15. After these things (his preaching the living God to the Athenians' unknown) Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth, and found a certain Jew, named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy with his wife Priscilla (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome), and came unto them; and be cause he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tent-makers. Ac. xviii. 1, 2, 3. Because that for his name's sake they (the Christian brethren) went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles, we therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellow helpers to the truth. 3 John 7, 8.

And there abide till ye go thence.] In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. Mar. vi. 10. And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart. Lu. ix. 4. In the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. Lu. x. 7, 8.

12 Salute it.] Into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shail rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. Lu. x. 5, 6. The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ; that word I say ye know, how

your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear 14 your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more 15

God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost, and with power, &c. Ac. x. 36, 37, 38. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. 2 Co. v. 20. I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee; our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name. 3 John 14.

13 Worthy.] As for me, when they were sick my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting, and my prayer returned into mine own bosom. Ps. xxxv. 13. If the son of peace be "there" (" in the house where ye enter"), your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. Lu. x. 6. We are unto God (said Paul) a sweet savour of Christ in them that are saved, and in them that perish. To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other, the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things. 2 Co. ii. 15, 16.

14 Whosoever shall not receive you.] See verses 40, 41. Whoso shall receive one such little child (of those converted and become as little children) in my name, receiveth me. Mat. xviii. 5. Whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment than for that city. Mar. vi. 11. Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me. Mar. ix. 37. And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them. Whosoever shall receive this child (whom Jesus took and set before him) in my name, receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth him that sent me; for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. Lu. ix. 5. 48. Into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, Even the very dust of your city which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you. Lu. x. 10, 11. He that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me. John xiii. 20. He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his Holy Spirit. 1 Th. iv. 8.

Shake off the dust.] Also I shook my lap (said Nehemiah), and said (to the usurers), So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this pro

mise; even thus be he shaken out and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the Lord. Ne. v. 13. The Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium. Ac. xiii. 50, 51. When Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ. And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles. Ac. xviii. 5, 6. Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. 4c. xx. 26, 27.

15 Verily I say unto you.] See chap. v. 18. and com. Verily I say unto you, this generation shall not pass till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Mat. xxiv. 34, 35.

It shall be more tolerable, &c.] It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment than for you. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for thee. Mat. xi. 22, 23, 24. As I live, saith the Lord God (to Jerusalem), Sodom, thy sister, hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters. Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom; pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her, and in her daughters: neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me; therefore I took them away as I saw good. Neither hath Samaria committed half thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more than they, and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations which thou hast done. Thou also, which hast judged, bear thine own shame for thy sins that thou hast committed more abominable than they. They are more righteous than thou: yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters. When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom

tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judg16 ment, than for that city. Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and 17 harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will deliver you

and her daughters shall return to their former estate; then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate. For thy sister Sodom was not mentioned by thy mouth in the day of thy pride. Ez. xvi. 48-56. Verily I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment than for that city. Mar. vi. 11. Be ye sure of this (said Jesus), that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you (the city that receivest not the disciples). But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city (which should not receive his disciples). Lu. x. 11, 12. If I had not come and spoken to them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin. He that hateth me hateth my Father also: and if I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. John xv. 22, 23, 24.

In the day of judgment.] I say unto you (said Jesus), that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. Mat. xii. 36. The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished. 2 Pe. ii. 9. The heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment, and perdition of ungodly men. 2 Pe. iii. 7. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as he is, so are we in this world. 1 John iv. 17.

16 As sheep in the midst of wolves.] Go your way; behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Lu. x. 3. I know this (said Jesus), that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Ac. xx. 29.

Wise as serpents.] Now the serpent was more subtile than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. What is this that thou hast done? (said the Lord to Eve.) And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. Ge. iii. 1. 13. I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist. Lu. xxi. 15. I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil. Ro. xvi. 19. Brethren, be not children in understanding; howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men. 1 Co. xiv. 20. I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the

simplicity that is in Christ: Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 2 Co. xi. 3. 14. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise; redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore, be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. Ep. v. 15, 16, 17. For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will, in all wisdom and spiritual understand. ing. Col. i. 9. Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Coliv.á.

And harmless as doves.] See preced. com. We have sent with "him" ("Titus") the brother, whose praise is in the Gospel, throughout all the churches. Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us. 2 Co. viii. 18. 20. Do all things without murmuring and disputings: that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world. Phi. ii. 14, 15. Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily, and justly, and unblameably, we behaved ourselves among you that believe. 1 The. ii. 10. Abstain from all appearance of evil. 1 The. v. 22. Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions, and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned, and avoid them; for they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words, and fair speeches, deceive the hearts of the simple. For your obedience is come abroad unto all men; I am glad therefore on your behalf Ro. xvi. 17, 18. Our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abun dantly to you-ward. 2 Co. i. 12.

17 Beware of men.] Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom. Mi. vii. 5. Take heed to your selves, for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten; and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them. Mar. xiii. 9. When there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews, with their rulers, to use them despitely, and to stone them, "they" (“Paul and Barnabas") were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about. Ae. xiv. 5, 6. And then (when the people were stirred

up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, 18

up by the Jews of Thessalonica), immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea; but Silas and Timotheus abode there still. Ac, xvii. 14. When it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves "under a curse" ("with an oath of execration"), saying, That they would neither eat nor drink, till they had killed Paul. And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy. And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul. Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain. So the chief captain then (having discovered the conspiracy), let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me. Ac. xxiii. 12, 13. 16, 17. 22. Of the Jews (said Paul) five times received I forty stripes save one; thrice was I beaten with rods; once was I stoned; thrice I suffered shipwreck; a night and a day I have been in the deep. In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren. 2 Co. xi. 24, 25, 26. Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. Phi. iii. 2. Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works. Of whom be thou ware also, for he hath greatly withstood our words. 2 Ti. iv. 14, 15.

For they will deliver.] See preced. com. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you; and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. Mat. xxiv. 9, 10. When they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say. Lu. xii. 11. Before all these (fearful sights and great signs from heaven), they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake. And it shall turn to you for a testimony. Lu. xxi. 12, 13. They shall put you out of the synagogues; yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. John xvi. 2. And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. And when they had set them (Peter and John) in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name have

ye done this (the cure of the impotent man)? Ac. iv. 6, 7. Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them (the apostles) without violence (for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned). Ac. v. 26. And Paul earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day. And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth. Ac. xxiii. 1, 2.

Councils.] See chap. v. 22.

And

Scourge you in their synagogues.] (the Scribes) shall deliver him to the Gentiles, to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him ; and the third day he shall rise again. Mat. xx. 19. Behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and Scribes; and some of them ye shall kill, and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city. Mat. xxiii. 34. It shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number. Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed, lest if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee. De. xxv. 2, 3. When they had called the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. Ac. v. 40. They know (said Saul to Jesus, who appeared to him) that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee. Ac. xxii. 19. And I punished them oft in every synagogue (said Paul in the presence of Agrippa), and compelled them to blaspheme, and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities. Ac. xxvi. 11. Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one; thrice was I beaten with rods; once was I stoned; thrice I suffered shipwreck; a night and a day I have been in the deep. 2 Co. xi. 24, 25. Others (of the excellent persons of old time) had trials of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment. He. xi. 36.

Lord,

18 Be brought before governors.] how are they increased that trouble me. Many are they that rise up against me. Many there be which say of my soul, there is no help for him in God. But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. I laid me down and slept; I waked, for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. Ps. iii. 1-6.

19 for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.

But when they

deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for 20 it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.

Then came one and told them (the chief priests), saying, Behold, the men (the apostles) whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people. Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them, without violence (for they feared the people lest they should have been stoned), and when they had brought them, they set them before the council. Ac. v. 25, 26, 27. Now about that time (that Agabus prophesied a dearth), Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the Church. And he killed James, the brother of John, with the sword. And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. Ac. xii. 1, 2, 3. And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to

keep him. Ac. xii. 4. See Ac. xxiv. and xxvi. At my first answer (when withstood by Alexander the coppersmith) no man stood with me; but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me, that by me the preaching might be fully known: and that all the Gentiles might hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. 2 Ti. iv. 16, 17.

For a testimony against them.] See chap. viii. 4. Be not thou ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of his prisoners; but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the Gospel, according to the power of God. 2 Ti. i. 8. I, John, who also am your brother and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. Re. i. 9. And when he (the Lamb) had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held. Re. vi. 9. When "they" ("the two witnesses) shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. Re. xi. 7.

19 When they deliver you up.] When they shall lead you and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate; but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye; for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost. Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and the children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death. Mar. xiii. 11, 12, 13. When they bring you unto the synagogues and unto magistrates and powers, take ye no thought, how or what

For

thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say. Lu. xii. 11. Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer. For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist. Lu. xxi. 14, 15.

Take no thought.] See chap. vi. 25. 31. 34. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. Ja. i. 5.

It shall be given.] Go, and I will be with thy mouth (said God to Moses), and teach thee what thou shalt say. And thou shalt speak unto "him" ("Pharaoh "), and put words in his mouth. And I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do. Ex. iv. 12. 15. The Lord said unto me (said Jeremiah), Say not I am a child; for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee. And whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces; for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord. Then the Lord put forth his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Put my words in thy mouth. Je. i. 7, 8, 9. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, answered, and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. Da. iii. 16, 17, 18. Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them (Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, &c. &c.), Ye rulers of the people and elders of Israel, if we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole, be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. Ae. iv. 8-14. Then Peter and the other aposties (being commanded by the high priest not to
