but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in

you whom ye shall fear; Fear him which, after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. Lu. xii. 4, 5. I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befal me there, save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying, That bonds and afflictions abide me. Ac. xx. 22, 23. But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry which I have received of the Lord Jesus to testify the gospel of the grace of God. Ac. xx. 24. What mean ye to weep, and to break mine heart (said Paul)? For I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. Ac. xxi. 13. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (as it is written, For thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.) Nay, in all things we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Ro. viii. 35-39. I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand; I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day, and not to me only, but unto them also that love his appearing. 2 Ti. iv. 6—8. Women received their dead raised to life again; and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. He. xi. 36. But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye; and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled. 1 Pe. iii. 14. Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. Re. ii. 10.

Fear him which is able, &c.] My flesh trembleth for fear of thee, and I am afraid of thy judgments. Ps. cxix. 120. In the multitude of dreams, and many words, there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God. Ec. v. 7. Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him: but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God. Ec. viii.

12, 13. To this man will I look, even to him that is poor, and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. Is. lxvi. 2. Fear ye not me? saith the Lord. Will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it; and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it? Je. v. 22. We receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and godly fear; for our God is a consuming fire. He. xii. 28, 29.

Able to destroy.] Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed? Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers? Mat. xxv. 26, 27. If thy hand offend thee, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched; where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. Mar. ix. 43. 48. It came to pass that the beggar (in the parable) died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried, and in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom; and he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame; but Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented; and besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulph fixed, so that they that would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to you that would come from thence. Lu. xvi. 22—26. The hour is coming in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth. They that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. John v. 28, 29. The Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 The i 8, 9. The devil that deceived them (the nations, Gog and Magog,) was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God: and the books were opened;

hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them 29 shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very 30 hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye 31 are of more value than many sparrows. Whosoever therefore 32 shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my

is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Re. xx. 10-15.

29 Two sparrows.] Fear not, therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. Lu. xii. 7.

Farthing.] The same servant (whose debt had been forgiven) went out, and found one of his fellow-servants, which owed him an hundred pence, and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. Mat. xviii. 28.

And one of them shall not fall.] These wait all upon thee that thou mayest give them their meat in due season; that thou givest them they gather; thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good; thou hidest thy face, they are troubled; thou takest away their breath, they die and return to their dust; thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created; and thou renewest the face of the earth. Ps. civ. 27-30.

30 The very hairs of your head.] And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid as the Lord liveth there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. 1 Sa. xiv. 45. As the Lord liveth (said David to the widow of Tekoah), there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth. 2 Sa. xiv. 11. And Solomon said, If he (Adonijah) will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth; but if wickedness shall be found in him he shall die. 1 Ki. i. 52. But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. Lu. xii. 7. But there shall not an hair of your head perish. Lu. xxi. 18. I pray you (those who sailed with Paul to Rome) to take some meat; for this is for your health; for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you. Ac. xxvii. 34.

31 Ye are of more value, &c.] See chap. vi. 26. What man shall there be among you that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath-day, will he not lay hold VOL. II.

on it, and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? Mat. xii. 11, 12. Thou hast made him (man) a little lower than the angels; and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Ps. viii. 5. Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn, and God feedeth them; how much more are ye better than the fowls. Lu. xii. 24. Doth not each of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? Lu. xiii. 15, 16. (For it is written in the law of Moses) Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt this is written, that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. 1 Co. ix. 9, 10.

32 Confess me.] I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed. Ps. cxix. 46. Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God; but he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. Lu. xii. 8, 9. The Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. John ix. 22. If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved; for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Ro. x. 9, 10. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who, before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession. 1 Ti. vi. 12, 13. Be not thou, therefore, ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel, according to the power of God. 2 Ti. i. 8. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him and he in God. 1 John iv. 15. I know thy works (said Christ to the angel of the church in Pergamos), and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is; and thou holdest fast my name, and hast

not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you where Satan dwelleth. Re. ii. 13.

Him will I confess.] Then shall the king say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Mat. xxv. 34. Wherefore the Lord God of Israel saith (to Eli), I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father should walk before me for ever: but now the Lord saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 1 Sa. ii. 30. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. Re. iii. 5.

33 Deny me. before men.] He (Peter) denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest. And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth; and again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them, for thy speech betrayeth thee; then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. Mat. xxvi. 70-75. Whosoever, therefore, shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. Mar. viii. 38. Whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed when he shall come in his own glory and in his Father's and of the holy angels. Lu. ix. 26. He that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. · Lu, xii. 9. If we deny him (Jesus) he also will deny us. 2 Ti. ii. 12. There were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 Pe. ii. 1. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father; (but he that acknowledgeth the Son, hath the Father also). 1 John ii. 23.

34 That I am come to send peace.] Woe is "me" (said “Jeremiah"), my mother, that

thou hast born me, a man of strife, and a man of contention to the whole earth, Je. xv. 10. I will send "them" ("the Jews," said the wisdom of God) prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute; that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation. Woe unto you, lawyers, for ye have taken away the key of knowledge; ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in, ye hindered. And as he said these things unto them, the Scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things, laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth that they might accuse him. Lu. xi. 49-54. Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying (if any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink), said, Of a truth, this is the Prophet; others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? Hath not the Scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? So there was a division among the people because of him. And some of them would have taken him, but no man laid hands on him. Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed. Nicodemus saith unto them (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them), Doth our law judge any man before it hear him, and know what he doeth? They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee! Search and look; for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. John vii. 40-52. When the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you; but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.

send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance 85 against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes 36 shall be they of his own houshold. He that loveth father or 37

But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. Ac. xiii. 45. 50. But the unbeliev ing Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren. But the multitude of the city was divided; and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles. Ac. xiv. 2. 4.

35 To set a man at variance against his father.] See verse 21, and com.

36 A man's foes shall be they, &c.] I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Ge. iii. 16. Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not; am I my brother's keeper? And he said, What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. Ge. iv. 8-10. Joseph went after his brethren and found them in Dothan. And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh. Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams. And (as Reuben interfered to save him) they took him and cast him into a pit; and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. And they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead, with their camels, bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood? Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content. Then there passed by Midianites, merchant-men, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver, and they brought Joseph into Egypt. Ge. xxxvii. 17-20. 24-28. Eliab his eldest brother heard when he (David) spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David; and he said, Why camest thou down hither? Let him alone, and let him curse, for the Lord hath bidden him. 2 Sa. xvi. 11. He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are verily estranged from me; my kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me; they that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger; I am an alien in their sight; I called my servant and he gave me no answer; I entreated him with my mouth; my breath is strange to my wife, though I entreated for the children's sake, of mine own body; yea, young children despised me; I arose and they spake against me; all my inward friends abhorred me, and they whom I loved are turned against me. Job xix. 13-19. Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me. Ps. xli. 9. It was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it; neither was it he that hated me, that did magnify himself against me: then I would have hid myself from him; but it was thou, a man, mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. Ps. lv. 12, 13. Even thy brethren (said the Lord to Jeremiah) and the house of thy father, even they have dealt treacherously with thee; yea, they have called a multitude after thee; believe them not, though they speak fair words unto thee. Je. xii. 6. All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him. Je. xx. 10. The son dishonoureth the father; the daugh ter riseth up against her mother; the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man's enemies are the men of his own house. Mi. vii. 6. I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. John xiii. 18. **

37 That loveth father or mother.] Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. Mat. xxii. 37. And of Levi he (Moses) said, Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy Holy One, whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah; who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children; for they

mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth 38 son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. 39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life

me,

have observed thy word and kept thy covenant. De. xxxiii. 8, 9. If any man come to and hate not his father and mother, and wife and children, and brethren and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. Lu. xiv. 26. All men should honour the Son even as they honour the Father; he that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. John v. 23. When they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. John xxi. 15-17. For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead; and that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves,

but unto him which died for them and rose again. 2 Co. v. 14, 15. What things were gain to me those I counted loss for Christ; yea, doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, and be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith. Phi. iii. 7-9.

Not worthy of me.] The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Mat. xxii. 8. They which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage. Lu. xx. 35. Watch ye, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. Lu. xxi. 36. We ourselves glory in you in the churches of God, for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations, that ye endure, which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer; seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; and to

you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels. 2 Th. i. 4-7. Thou (the angel of the church in Sardis) hast a few names even in Sardis, which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy. Re. iii. 4.

38 Taketh not his cross.] If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take his cross and follow me. Mar. x. 21. If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Whosoever doth not bear his cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. Lu. xiv. 27. He (Jesus) bearing his cross, went forth into a place called the place of a scull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha. John xix. 17.

39 Findeth his life shall lose it.] See Mat. xvi. 25. Whosoever will save his life shall lose it; and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul. Mat. xvi. 25, 26. Whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the Gospel's, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul; or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Mar. viii. 35, 36, 37. Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it. Lu. xvii. 33. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world, shall keep it unto life eternal. John xii. 25. I know that this shall turn to my salvation, through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ according to my earnest expectation and my hope. That in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness as always, so now also, Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain.
