if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, 25 I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, 26 Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out 27

creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Ro. viii. 28, 29. 32. 37-39. Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. 2 Ti. ii. 19. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead: to an inherit ance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Pe. i. 3, 4, 5. We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; *but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. 1 John v. 18. And the great dragon was cast 2 out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony: and they loved not their lives unto the death. Re. xii.

9, 10, 11. And it was given unto "him' ("the beast with seven heads and ten horns") to make war with the saints, and to overcome [#them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth: and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon: and he deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast, saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast which had the wound by a sword, and did live. Re. xiii. 7, 8. 14.

If it were possible.] He also that received seed among the thorns, is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. Mat. xiii. 22. Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia; for he hasted, if were possible for him to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost. Ac. xx. 16. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you live

peaceably with all men.

Ro. xii. 18. Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? For I bear record, that if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me. Ga. iv. 15.

25 Behold, I have told you before.] See xxviii. 8. And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them. Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? Ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? Yea, there is no God; I know not any. Is. xliv. 7, 8. I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it. Is. xlvi. 9, 10, 11. I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldst say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them. Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them. Is. xlviii. 5, 6. And "it" ("that the disciples should be persecuted") shall turn to you (said Jesus) for a testimony. Lu. xxi. 13. These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. John xvi. 1.

26 He is in the desert.] In those days came John the baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea. Mat. iii. 1. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a high way for our God. Is. xl. 3. Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. And he (John) came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Lu. iii. 2, 3. Art not thou that Egyptian (said the chief captain to Paul) which before these days madest an uproar, and leddest out into the wilderness four thousand men that were murderers. Ac. xxi. 38.

of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the 28 coming of the Son of man be. For wheresoever the carcase is, 29 there will the eagles be gathered together. Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon

they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are. Job xxxv. 35. And the Lord shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall shew the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hail-stones. Is. xxx. 30. And the Lord shall be seen over "them" ("Judah and Ephraim"), and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning; and the Lord God shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south. Zec. ix. 14. For as the lightning that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven, so shall also the Son of man be in his day. Lu. xvii. 24.

The coming of the Son of man be.] Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. Mat. xvi. 28. But who may abide the day of his coming? And who shall stand when he appeareth? For he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap. And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver; that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. Mal. iii. 2, 3. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. Mal. iv. 5. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts; for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. Ja. v. 8. Where is the promise of his coming (say the scoffers)? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 2 Pe. iii. 4.

28 Wheresoever the carcase is, &c.] The Lord shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth; as swift as the eagle flieth, a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand. De. xxviii. 49. Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high? She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place; from thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off; her young ones also suck up blood, and where the slain are, there is she. Job xxxix. 27-30. Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the Lord, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks. Je. xvi. 16. I saw the Lord standing upon the altar, and he said, Smite the lintel of the door, that the post may shake, and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword. He that fleeth of them shall not flee

away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered. Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them: though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down; and though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them: and though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall slay them; and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good. Am. ix. 1—4. Wheresoever the body is (said Jesus), thither will the eagles be gathered together. Lu. xvii. 37.

29 Immediately after the tribulation.] See verse 8. I beheld (in the vision of God's kingdom) then because of the voice great words which the horn spake, I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning fame. As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away, yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time. Da. vii. 11, 12. But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light; and the stars of the heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. Mar. xiii. 24, 25.

Shall the sun be darkened.] The stars of heaven, and the constellations thereof, shall not give their light; the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. Is. xiii. 10. Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously. Is. xxiv. 23. I be held the earth, and lo it was without form, and void, and the heavens, and they had no light; I beheld the mountains, and lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly And I beheld, and lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled; I beheld, and lo, the fruitful place was a ness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the Lord, and by his fierce anger; for thus hath the Lord said, The whole land shall be desolated, yet will! not make a full end; for this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black; because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turu back from it. Je. iv. 23-28. And when I shall put thee out I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not

shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear 30 the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send 31

give her light. All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord God. Ez. xxxii. 7, 8. The earth shall quake before "them" ("the locusts"); the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. And I will shew wonders in the heavens, and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke; the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come. Joel ii. 10. 30, 31. The day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision; the sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. Joel iii. 14, 15. Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness and not light? Even very dark, and no brightness in it? Am. v. 20. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon; and I will darken the earth in the clear day. Am. viii. The great day of the Lord is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the Lord; the mighty man shall cry there bitterly; that day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness. Zep. i. 14, 15. There shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars, and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and waves roaring, men's hearts failing them for fear, and for look ing after those things which are coming on the earth; for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. Lu. xxi. 25, 26. This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel, I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath, blood, and fire, and vapour of

smoke;

the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come. Ac. ii. 19, 20. And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and lo, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; and the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig-tree casteth her untimely figs when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bond-man, and every free-man, hid themselves in the

dens, and in the rocks of the mountains. And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of his wrath is come, and who shall be able to stand? Re. vi. 12—17.

The powers of the heavens shall be shaken.] The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat; the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burnt up. 2 Pe. iii. 10.

30 The sign of the Son of man.] See verse 3. I saw in the night visions, and behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days: and they brought him near before him. Da. vii. 13. Tell us when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled? Mar. xiii. 4. Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him; and they also which pierced him; and all the kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him, even so, Amen. Re. i. 7.

And then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn.] And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace, and of supplications; and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him as one mourneth for his only son; and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first-born. Zec. xii. 10. See preced.

See the Son of man coming.] See chap. xvi. 27, 28. And then they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. Mar. xiii. 26. Master (said the disciples), but when shall these things be? And what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass? Lu. xxi. 7. Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. Lu. xxii. 69. Ye men of Galilee (said the angels), why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven (at Christ's ascension). Ac. i. 11. To you who are troubled (God will recompense), rest with us when the Lord

Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his

mighty angels. 2 The. i. 7.

31 He shall send, &c.] All power is given unto me (said Jesus) in heaven and in earth.

Mat. xxviii. 18. Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mar. xvi. 15, 16. Thus it is written, That repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Lu. xxiv. 47.

Whereupon, O king Agrippa (said Paul after his conversion), was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision, but shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. Ac. xxvi. 19. 20.

His angels.] The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity. Mat. xiii. 41. When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory. Mat. xxv. 31. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches. Re. i. 20.

Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write (said the faithful witness to John). Re. ii. 1. And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting Gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people. Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come, and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountain of waters. And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. And the third angel followed them saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God. Re.

xiv. 6-10.

With a great sound of a trumpet.] And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Make thee two trumpets of silver, of a whole piece shalt thou make them, that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps. And when they shall blow with them, all the assembly shall assemble themselves to thee at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation; and if they blow but with one trumpet, then the princes which are heads of the thousands of Israel shall gather themselves unto thee. When ye blow an alarm, then the camps that lie on the east part shall go forward. When ye blow an alarm the second time, then the camps that

lie on the south side shall take their journey: they shall blow an alarm for their journeys. But when the congregation is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm. And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an ordinance for ever throughout your generations. And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the Lord your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies. Also in the day of your glad ness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt-offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace-offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your God: I am the Lord your God. Na. x. 1-10. Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solema feast day. Ps. lxxxi. 3. And it shall come to pass in that day (of the restoration of the dispersed), that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem. Is. xxvii. 13. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump (for the trumpet shall sound), and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 1 Co. xv. 51, 52. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first. 1 The. iv. 16.

Gather together his elect, &c.] And he shall set up an ensign for the nations; and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed from the four corners of the earth. Is. xi. 12. Lift up thine eyes round about and behold; all these gather themselves together, and come to thee. di I live, saith the Lord, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all as with an ornament, and bind them on thee as a bride doeth. Is. xlix. 18. Lift up thine eyes round about and see; all they gather themselves together; they come to thee; thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side. Is. lx. 4. And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal; yea, ye shall dee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah, king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with thee. Zec. xiv. 5. “Then” (“at the coming of the Son of man") shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect

the other. Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch 32 is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know 33 that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, This 34 generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven 35

from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven. Mar. xiii. 27. And not for that nation (the Jews) only (did Jesus die), but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. John xi. 52. (God) having made known unto us the mystery of his will, that in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth, even in him. Ep. i. 10. Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, that ye be not soon shaken in mind, &c. 2 The. ii. 1, 2.

From one end of heaven to the other.] All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord; and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. Ps. xxii. 27. God shall bless us, and all the ends of the earth shall fear him. Ps. Ixvii. 7. They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the Lord, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land. Is. xiii. 5. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein, the isles, and the inhabitants thereof. Is. xlii. 10. I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth. Is. xliii. 6. Look unto me and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is none else. Is. xlv. 22. And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battlebow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth. Zec. ix. 10. But I say, Have they not heard? Yes, verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. Ro. x. 18. 32 A parable of the fig-tree.] Now learn i parable of the fig-tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know hat summer is near: so ye, in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors. Mar. ciii. 28, 29. And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig-tree, and all the trees; when hey now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at and. Lu. xxi. 29, 30.

33 When ye shall see, &c.] See verse 3. Know that it is near.] Also, thou Son of

man, thus saith the Lord God unto the land of Israel, An End; the end is come upon the four corners of the land. Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send mine anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense upon thee all thine abominations, &c. Ez. vii. 2, 3, &c. For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. He. x. 37. Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. Ja. v. 9. But the end of all things is at hand, be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. 1 Pe. iv. 7.

34 This generation shall not pass.] Then goeth "he" (" the unclean spirit") and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there, and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. Mat. xii. 45. Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom, Mat. xvi. 28. All these things shall come upon this generation. Mat. xxiii. 36. This generation shall not pass till all these things be done. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Mar. xiii. 30, 31. That the blood of the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation. Lu. xi. 50. This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Lu. xxi. 32, 33.

35 Heaven and earth, &c.] See chap. v. 18. And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved; and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll, and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig-tree. Is. xxxiv. 4. For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee; neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord, that hath mercy on thee. Is. liv. 10. saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea, when the waves thereof roar. The Lord of hosts is his name. If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the Lord, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. Je. xxxi. 35, 36. But the heavens and the earth which are now, by the me word (of
