visited me:

36 me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye 37 I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed 38 thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a 39 stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when 40 saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King

cause that for his name's sake, they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellow-helpers to the truth. 3 John 5-8.

36 Naked, and ye clothed me.] If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; if his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep: then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone. Job xxxi. 19, 20. 22. He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat let him do likewise. Lu. iii. 11. What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body, what doth it profit? Ja. ii. 14, 15, 16.

Was sick, and ye visited.] See verse 43. The diseased have "ye" ("the shepherds of Israel") not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost: but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them. Ex. xxxiv. 4. I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. Ac. xx. 35. It came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever, and of a bloody flux, to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him. So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came and were healed. Ac. xxviii. 8, 9. Pure religion, and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. Ja. i. 27. Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith snall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Ja. v. 14, 15.

I was in prison.] I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at the last your care of me

hath flourished again, wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity; not that I speak in respect of want; for I have learned in whatever state I am therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Every where, and in all things I am instructed both to be full, and to be hungry, both to abound, and to suffer need: I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction. Phi. iv. 10-14. The Lord gave mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain. But when he was in Rome he sought me out very diligently, and found me. The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day; and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus thou knowest very well. 2 Ti. i. 16, 17, 18. For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. He. x. 34. Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them, and then which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body. He. xiii. 3.

37 When saw we thee an hungred?] When thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth. Mat. vi. 3. But who am I (said David), and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? For all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee. 1 Ch. xxix. 14. The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom, and before honour is humility. Pr. xv. 33. We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags, and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Is. Ixiv. 6. By the grace of God I am what I am; and his grace which was be stowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 1 Co. xv. 10. Likewise ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder; yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility; for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. 1 Pe. v. 5, 6.

40 The King shall answer.] See verse 34. Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king,

shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye

and stand not in the place of great men; for better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither, than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen. Pr. xxv. 6, 7.

Inasmuch as ye have done it, &c.] And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. Mat. x. 42. And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake. And David said unto "him" ("Mephibosheth"), Fear not, for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father, and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually. 2 Sa. ix. 1. 7. He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his neighbour; but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor. Pr. xiv. 31. He that hath pity on the poor, lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. Pr. xix. 17. Whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink, in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward. Mar. ix. 41. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother. And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. John xix. 26, 27. So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things, thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. John xxi. 15, 16, 17. The salutation of me, Paul, with mine own hand. If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maran-atha. 1 Co. xvi. 21, 22. We preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. 2 Co. iv. 5. For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead. And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. 2 Co. v. 14, 15. Therefore, as ye

abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in "this grace" (“liberality") also. I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love. For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. 2 Co. viii. 7, 8, 9. For in Jesus Christ, neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but faith which worketh by love. For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance; against such there is no law, Ga. v. 6. 13. 22. But as touching brotherly love, ye need not that I write unto you, for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another; and indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia. But we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more. 1 The. iv. 9, 10. Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently. 1 Pe. i. 22. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not, ́› knoweth not God, for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar; for he that loveth not his brother, whom he hath seen, how can he love God, whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. 1 John iv. 7-12. 20, 21. See chap. xxv. 45.

The least of these my brethren.] And "he" ("Jesus") stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother, and my brethren. For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. Mat. xii. 49, 50. Whoso shall receive one such little child in my name, receiveth me: but whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him

41 have done it unto me.

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared

the judgment of the stranger, fatherless, and widow. Cursed be he that smiteth his neighbour secretly. Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person. Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say, Amen. De. xxvii. 15-26. If thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes, which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. Cursed shall be thy basket and thy Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shale thou be when thou goest out. De. xxviii. 15

that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. Mat. xviii. 5, 6. 10. Be not afraid (said Jesus to the women after his resurrection), go, tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. Mat. xxviii. 10. And "he" ("Jesus") looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren. For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother. Mar. iii. 34, 35. Touch me not (said Jesus to Mary Magdalene), for I am not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God.-19. Thou hast rebuked the proud that are John xx. 17. Both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one; for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren; in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the Devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. He. ii. 11-15. For God is not unrighteous to forget your work, and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. He. vi. 10.

Ye have done it unto me.] Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest; it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. c. ix. 4, 5. For we are members of "his" ("Christ's") body, of his flesh, and of his bones. Ep. iii. 30.

41 Them on the left hand.] See verse 33. Depart from me, ye cursed.] See chap. vii. 23. Depart from me, ye evil doers, for I will keep the commandments of my God. Ps. cxix. 115. Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God; depart from me, therefore, ye bloody men. Ps. cxxxix. 19.

Ye cursed.] Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the Lord. Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. Cursed be he that removeth his neighbour's landmark. Cursed be he that maketh the blind to wander out of the way. Cursed be he that perverteth

cursed, which do err from thy commandments. Ps. cxix. 21. Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord. Je. xvii 5. As many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith; and the law is not of faith, but the man that doeth them shall live in them. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us; for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree. Ga. iii. 10-13. "That" ("earth") which beareth thorns and briers i rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned. He. vi. 8.

Everlasting fire]. See verse 46. See chap. iii. 12. The tares are gathered and burned in the fire. The Son of man shall east "them" ("all things that offend") into = furnace of fire; and shall cast “them” (“the wicked") into the furnace of fire. Mat. xiii. 40. 42. 50. The Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven, taking vengeance on them that know not God; who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power. 2 The. i. 9. The “same” (“ if any man wợ?ship the beast") shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation. And he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever. And they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and who soever receiveth the mark of his name. Re

xiv. 10, 11. And the Devil that deceived them (the nations) was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever. And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life, and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them; and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire: this is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Re. xx. 10-15.

Prepared for the Devil, &c.] Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it. John viii. 44. What, if God willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much long suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction; and that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of his mercy which he hath afore prepared unto glory. Ro. ix. 22, 23. If God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished. 2 Pe. 4. 9. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the Devil; whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. 1 John iii. 10. And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness, unto the judgment of the great day. Jude 6. And there was war in heaven, Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought, and his angels, and prevailed not, neither was their place found any more in heaven. Re. xii. 7,8.

42 I was an hungred, &c.] See verse 35. He that loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me. And he that loveth son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. Mat. x. 37, 38. Woe unto them that drink wine in

bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments; but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. Am. vi. 6. All men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father who hath sent him. John v. 23. If God were your Father, ye would love me; for I proceeded forth and came from God: neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the Devil; and the lusts of your father ye will do. John viii. 42, 43, 44. He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. John xiv. 21. If a man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maran-atha. 1 Co. xvi. 22. Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 The. i. 8. If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace; be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body, what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works; shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well; the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead. Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness; and he was called the friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. Ja. ii. 15— 24. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer; and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? 1 John iii. 14-17. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true,

Ps. cv. 15. Whoso mocketh the poor, reproacheth his Maker; and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished. Pr. xvii. 5. Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself but shall not be heard. Pr. xxi. 13. Thus saith the Lord of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you; for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye. Zec. ii. 8. If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own; but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. John xv. 18, 19. Who art thou, Lord (said Saul)? And the Lord said, I am Jesus, whom thou persecutest; it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. Ac. ix. &. We should love one another, not as Cain, whe was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because bis own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother. abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer; and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue, bet in deed, and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. 1 John iii. 11-20. 44 When saw we thee, &c.] See verses 24 -27. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? Mat. vii. 22. And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the Lord; I have performed the commandment of the Lord. And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen, which I hear? And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God, and the rest we have utterly destroyed. And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone the way which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal. 1 Sa. xv. 13, 14, 15. 20, 21. How canst thou say, I am not polluted? I have not gone after Baalim ? See thy way in the valley; know what thou hast done: yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me; behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned. Je. ii. 23. 35. A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master. If then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the Lord of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name: and ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name? Mal. i. 6. Ye have wearied the Lord with your words; yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and he delighteth in them; or where is the God of judgment? Mal. ii. 17. Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord; yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Mal. iii. 13. But he (the lawyer), willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? Lu. x. 29.
